Everton - Burnley

For Toffees this season so far looks like endless nightmare. Instead a battle for Europe, Everton hold 14^th place with 19 points from past 18 games. Although injury crisis has been shaking the club from the start and they had to play huge number of games, this season is under all expectations and even Moyes’ job isn’t safe anymore. Everton haven’t noticed a win in seven league games (last time vs. West Ham, away 1-0) and they’re without a win in six games at Goodison. Despite bad results, they have been putting a decent display lately, dressing room atmosphere is still high – players believe in better days, just need a first win to turn the corner. But, Moyes continues to have defensive problems, with Sylvain Distin and Joseph Yobo still not fit enough to return. Skipper Phil Neville could make his return after three months out with a knee injury.

After excellent start of the season, newcomers from Turf Moor felt in the crisis of results. They’re in the winless run of seven league games and hold 13^th place (one point more than today’s opponent). On the road have taken just a single point from nine games (Man.City 3-3)! But, as Everton they’re performances are also above the results. In last two games on the road (two 0-2 defeats) were a little bit unlucky to get something from it. Against Pompey created plenty of real goal chances, but didn’t score, while vs. Wolves were short for a clear penalty kick and also missed few very good chances. Their main problem is attractive and offensive style of play that has brought some results at home, but on the road causes defense has been leaking too much goals. Manager Owen Coyle also has big defensive worries, as pair of central defenders, Clarke Carlisle and Steven Caldwell, missed the 1-1 draw against Bolton with groin strains and their appearance is in doubt.

This game looks like to be, or not to be for a home side. They desperately need a win and will host a team which has 8 defeats from 9 away games. On the other hand, Toffees still have lots of problems in back line with injuries. Neville is maybe fit but lacks in competitive games and his return could even cause additional problems behind. Everton - Tottenham Hot.

Everton find themselves at 16th place with just two points more than teams from relegation zone. Considering players’ potential they’re probably in the top six, but injury crisis that has been shaking the club since the season start is actually the main reason for poor run of results. Everton have only two competitive wins in last twelve games! At Wednesday they defeated AEK 1-0 in Greece, but the price was another three injuries! Joseph Yobo are unlikely to return in time from hamstring strains, while Leon Osman is struggling with an ankle problem. Johnny Heitinga is suspended after he picked up his fifth booking of the season last weekend. In total – eleven players!

Tottenham play the season that could be different from the others. They always have big funds, top-quality players but break in the top of English football was just a dream. It seems the decisive move was bringing Harry Redknap for a manager. Spurs hold the fourth place and with possible three points today will even climb for one more position. As Everton, they also had a mid-week game at Old Trafford and notice an unlucky defeat. However, before that game Redknap stated that Premier is much more important and I think they don’t look behind too much. Spurs are once again without first choice centre-backs Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate, but they used to cope with it. Redknapp is likely to recall the first-team players who were rested against Manchester United.

Despite all those injuries Everton have some attacking potential, but defense line looks very vulnerable. At this moment, Everton probably can’t be competitive against any top club in Premier. On the other hand, Spurs still have an inferiority complex when play against big four, but in other games they will always be the favorites. As today. Pinnacle offer 2.39. Everton will have to cope with big injury problems in defence line. Yobo, Jagielka, Neill, Heitinga are all out. Moyes will also give a chance to some youngsters and starting eleven is a mistery.

Everton 4 - 0 AEK Athens

Everton opened their Europa League Group I account by dismantling outclassed AEK Athens in a game marred by two second-half red cards.
The hosts took an early lead through Joseph Yobo's header and soon added a second as Sylvain Distin poked home. 
Stephen Pienaar rifled in a stunning third shortly before the break, with Jo turning sharply to add a late fourth. 
AEK had Carlos Araujo red carded after 54 minutes and Louis Saha followed late on for raising his hand to a defender. 
Saha barely made contact with the face of AEK defender Juanfran, who made a meal of the incident, in stoppage time but it was right in front of the referee and he had no hesitation in dismissing the French striker. 
Araujo, on the other hand, could have had no complaints after he was sent off for kicking out at Distin following a challenge with the French defender. 
Everton have a had a sticky start to the Premier League season but from the opening whistle they were a cut above their Greek visitors.
Jack Rodwell and Tim Cahill took control of midfield and with Pienaar looking lively down the right and Jo causing a makeshift AEK defence plenty of problems, it was only a matter of time before the goals started flowing. 
Just before kick-off Everton confirmed they had signed Australia captain Lucas Neill and the right-back was in the stands to see two of his new defensive comrades get on the scoresheet inside the opening 17 minutes.

CSKA Sofia 1 - 1 Fulham

Diomansy Kamara's second-half strike ensured a much-changed Fulham marked their Europa League group stages bow with a precious point at CSKA Sofia.
The Senegalese striker latched on to a ball over the top to round the keeper and slot home as Fulham held off an effervescent Sofia side in Bulgaria. 
The hosts had taken the lead when Michel lashed home from 20 yards. 
And they could have won it had Fulham keeper David Stockdale not tipped Yordan Todorov's drive over the bar. 
A point was always going to be a valuable one for Fulham as they made their first appearance in the group stages of a European competition in the club's history, but Sofia's hussle-and-bustle approach almost ensured the Londoners were forced to make the long trip home with nothing. 
As it was, Kamara rounded off a fine individual display with a very well taken goal to reward Fulham's determination and just about justify boss Roy Hodgson's decision to rest nine first-team players. 
This time last season, Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill made eight changes for his side's Uefa Cup clash against CSKA Moscow and they subsequently lost 2-0 and were dumped out of the competition. 
But that did not deter Hodgson, with only keeper Stockdale and defender John Pantsil surviving from Sunday's Premier League win over Everton. 
It did, however, lead to a disjointed opening from the Londoners, and CSKA Sofia were by far the better starters at the Vasil Levski National

Everton - AEK

Everton started new Premier League campaign with three defeats from opening four games and although Moyes and other officials claim opposite, Joleon Lescot’s departure is a big hit for club from Goodison. Defence line is so far the weakest link on the pitch. Another hit came from medical report as another key defender and skipper, Phil Neville, is likely to be out for three months with knee ligament damage. Silvain Distin and Joseph Yobo simply need some time to gel up, while new signing from Atletico Madrid John Heitinga is ineligible for Europa League. But, that’s not the end, another defender, Tony Hibbert, is suspended. So, serious problem have become a real headache. Good news are Everton is still a big favorite tonight and between resting key players and winning for raising self confidence, David Moyes will very probably choose the second option (as in previous occasions). £10mill. weight signing from Locomotiv Moscow, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, will finally make his full debut (so far just three minutes on the pitch). Other players if fully fit and only dilemma is will Moyes rest some of his keys for Blackburn at Sunday. 

Beside they finished fourth in the previous campaign in domain league, AEK is probably the best Greek club beside Olympiakos and Pao. They started domain campaign with both opening wins, while in European previous round eliminated decent Romanians – Vaslui (1-2 away, 3-0 at home). They’re typical represent of Greek football. Players with great technical skill, they have a high level of fighting spirit and their play is really nice to watch. But, at the same tame, shaky defences (AEK’s goalie-Sebastian Saja is in more than decent shape, though) and lack of physical strength and tactics usually bring a bad outcome when they play in European competitions. AEK have noticed just a single win in last eleven European games on the road and their record is especially bad when they play against British clubs (Everton haven’t lost at home in Europe for about four years, btw.). No big missings for tonight match and despite AEK can produce some good display and score, they’re still underdogs at Goodison Park. Their chances are in underestimating by the opponent and in Everton’s defence line.

Home side will try to return some of their self confidence and fill the Greek’s net, but at the same time their problems in defence line shouldn’t be overlooked. AEK will try to make some mess and avoid defeat at least, but true is anything except Everton’s win would be a first class surprise. However, I see goals on both sides and odds on over are more than acceptable. 2.12 at Pinnacle. Over.

France - Nigeria

France national team won’t play competitive games in this period. They’ll use two friendlies, Nigeria tonight in St Etienne and Turkey in Lyon three days later, to prepare for games against Faroe Islands and Romania. France started recent qualifying campaign “as usual”, loosing in the first round against Austria on the road (1-3), then made a draw in Romania, a win at home against Serbia and a double against Lithuania. They’re second in the group and at least play-off is secured. The game in Belgrade, against Serbia will probably decide the direct traveler to South Africa. For this game Raymond Domenech called 25 players, 12 for domain league. He decided to call back two players. Veteran, 32-year-old Patrick Vieira, has played only two friendlies for France in the past 18 months, missing Euro 2008 and all the World Cup qualifiers so far. Second one is more reasonable. With his excellent performances under the guidance of Guus Hiddink, Florent Malouda left Domenech with almost no choice but to recall him. Thierry Henry has been ruled out with a sore knee and no replacement has been named. Beside usual motives, some of the key players (in fact, maybe half of the team) have not found their new clubs and will certainly try to show themselves in the best shape. Atmosphere in St Etienne will be more noisy and less friendly than in Paris.


The Super Eagles are using this match to prepare for Sunday's 2010 World Cup qualifier against Kenya. At Friday, they played equal 1-1 against Ireland at Fulham’s stadium. Team’s good performance stayed in the shadow of the clash national coach Shuaibu Amodu on one side and angry supporters and Nigeria’s journalist who demand his dismissal, on the other. The reason is goalless draw against Mozambique in their opening World Cup qualifier. Additional problem for Amodu is missing players. Obafemi Martins and Chinedu Obasi have left the squad because the injuries. Michael Eneramo, who impressed in Friday's draw, will not feature too. Defender Joseph Yobo and midfielder John Mikel Obi - both involved in FA Cup action on Saturday - joined the squad on Sunday, but the question is are these two mentally and physically prepared for national team friendly. Players are happy to have opportunity to face one of the best World teams. Amodu have been trying to decrease player’s enthusiasm repeating this game is just preparation for Kenya. In that purpose, maybe he’ll change something in the first eleven.

Although it seems the press decrease the pressure on Domenech, ‘cause the bad start in campaign and not so good team performances, any result except victory can bring a bad atmosphere before the decisive games in group 7. France will have the best eleven (excluding Henry) and they’re much better side. Pinnacle offers 1.62. As a gamble I take x-1, ht/ft, odds around 4.60. Home win.
