Everton - Tottenham

I’m not sure what’s going on with Everton. They have had a bad run almost in every season under Moyes, but this time they apparently can’t pull themselves out of the mud. Everton have only one win in last ten games (City away) and have gained only ten points at home (only Blackpool got less). Also, Toffees kept a clean sheet only once in those ten (Wigan at home 0-0) and their performance doesn’t look good. The big(gest) problem for tonight is absence of Moyes’ key man, Tim Cahill (scored 9 of 21 team’s goals), who is out for Australian national team. Defender Jagielka is also out, while Heitinga and Coleman are facing a late fitness test. Everton have only managed to win two of their last nine home games.

Beside Man Utd, Tottenham are probably enjoy the best shape in Premier. They haven’t felt the taste of defeat in eleven competitive games (won six and draw twice in last 8 Premier games) and have noticed three league wins in a row. They play very well and have Bale (11 goals) and Van der Vaart (10 goals) in fantastic form. Bad news is ‘Arry also has some injury worries. Defoe and Kaboul are still suspended, while Hutton and Gallas got the knocks and their appearance is doubtful.

This is great value for me, Spurs shouldn’t be priced at 3.14 (away win at Pinnacle). They maybe looked tired against Fulham (or just were keeping the strength, who knows) and have some problems with defence line, but Everton’s attack without Cahill usually looks toothless. Goodison is not a happy place to go, but I can’t see the hosts winning this one. I’m covering a draw and taking dnb option at excellent odd.

Maybe one more game...

Value Betting - Guide for Beginners

I wrote an article for www.superbetting.com about value betting. It should be useful for beginners, but interesting for everyone. Enjoy...

Please, be free to comment it.

Here’s the original address of the article:
p
p
VALUE BETTING - GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Value betting is pretty new concept based on the assumption some teams are overpriced or underpriced by bookmakers. There are always plenty of arguing between supporters and opponents of this concept. One side says betting on unfair prices is nothing else than giving your hard earned money directly into bookies’ full pockets. Other group points irrelevance of 0.05-0.10 odds difference and states that human brain is not a Deep Blue computer to make a difference between 65% and 66% (for example) possibility of winning. So, which group is right?
p
Understanding the concept
p
To understand the basic concept of value betting, first you must understand how betting market works in general. Probably the best example for explanation is tossing of a coin. There are always two possible outcomes - heads and tails. So, there is 50% of probability for both. Converting that in odds, we get 2.00 (I’ll use decimal odds format) and that would be a fair odd. If you toss a coin 1000 times, you will get 500 times each of two outcomes. Maybe few times less or more than that, but your balance would be around zero. Now imagine two guys who make an online bet and put $50 dollars on it, both. One of them loses $50, other wins $100? Well, no. In that case bookmaker would not get anything and their existence is based on profit (huge profit, that is why their number is countless nowadays). It is not a steal (not yet, at least), that’s how the whole industry works. So they won’t offer 2.00, but 1.90 (for example). New situation is next, one bettor will lost $50, other will get $95 and bookie will have guaranteed $5 of each bet. Now, let’s imagine 1000 bets. You will invest $50.000 and as it’s predictable you will win 500 times. But instead $50 (single bet) x 2.00 (fair odd) x 500 (number of winning bets) = $50.000 (zero profit), you’ll get only 50 x 1.90 (market odd) x 500 = $47.500! Bookmaker’s services, remember? What about if some bookie, because the lack of competition, impudently offers you 1.85 for the same bet? Short answer, he will get additional $1.250 bonus for the services (50 x 1.85 x 500 = 46.250)! If you don’t care about 0.05 difference (despite it looks so irrelevant), you will be making an extra tip to the bookie.

How it really works?

Now, I'll convert this into real betting. What is a basketball spread betting (or Asian handicaps in football) other than two outcomes with same possibility? Bookmakers are hiring the best experts to make basketball offer that rates chances of both teams with 50%. Margin, for example, is -5.5 on team A. They will win with 6 or more, or will not. Our fair odd should be 2.00, in reality they are 1.85 - 1.95. If you decide to test your luck in betting for one weekend, it’s not a big deal. If you are in the betting world for few years or more, you would be probably shocked if realize how much money you have wasted just because not paying attention on 0.05 difference. Now, you are starting to scratch your head. On the betting market, 99% of bettors are losing their money and just 1% winning at the long-term. Pay attention where you are placing your bets. Best possible advice is to make several accounts at different books and choose the best odd for every event.

Now I come to the point where supporters and opponents of value betting start clamoring. How to make decision is there any value in some odd and does it worth of a bet?! For this purpose I'll include bets with three possible outcomes, a typical 1X2 betting in football games (as at two outcomes, here is also bookies’ provision deducted from 100%). Let me make one example. In season 2009/10, Chelsea were priced 1.20 at home against Everton (that is usual price for Chelsea at home against any team out of top six). 1.20 odd means there is 83.33% of chance it will be a home win. Chelsea were the strongest team in Premier League, no injuries, no mercy at Stamford Bridge. Everton had long injury list and big crisis in performance and results. So, does it worth of a bet? Opponent of value betting would say it is the easiest and fastest way to make 20% of profit. Safe as in the bank, but you get it for less than two hours! Supporter will ask him: “Would you bet on it if there is 1.01 odd instead 1.20?! One percent is still good for 120 minutes!” Hmm... If you wish to bet on such low odds, you have to be aware of this. Betting on 1.20 actually means you have to make a streak of 5 consecutive wins to avoid loss. Winning bet of $100 stake on 1.20 brings you $20 of profit. If you lose only one of five, you will be in deficit. Now, look at the history of Chelsea - Everton meetings at Stamford Bridge. Last five ended with only two home wins and three draws! Opponent is in trouble and his bank is broke.

Calculating the value

There are many different ways for calculating the value. One group are math experts and use complicated methods for calculation the fair odds. Even I made once a formula for calculation Asian handicaps. After "only" about half an hour, I could tell you is it better to take -0.75 or -1.0 handicap, where's a better value and where bookie made a mistake. All of my methodology crashed like a house of cards when I realized that 5% difference in my assumption about possibility causes changing the “fair odd” for 0.15! If I say there is 60% of possibility Liverpool will defeat Aston Villa at home, odd should be 1.67. With 65%, it should be 1.53! So, how the hell I should know is it 60%, or 65%?! Other group of supporters use statistical methods, based on history results. On that way they calculate possibility of future results and are finding the value. I have not investigated these methods. Football is not the same game like before 20 years, why results should be?

My warmly advice to all beginners is to pay attention on the price at the same way as you do about the outcomes. You are pretty sure Liverpool will defeat Villa? Fine. Now, look at the offer. 1.40? That's pity. Leave it and don’t think about that game again. Continue with the researching and you’ll find another game with acceptable odd. After few years of betting you will get a sense for value and fair odds and your hard work will start to pay off.

Weekend's results

My betting weekend in one sentence. Barnsley and Chelsea were extremely unlucky to not book the three points, Berbatov went insane, Norwich were great, Everton disgusting.

Barnsley - Watford 0-0  1/2 LOST
Man Utd - Blackburn 7-1 WON
Everton - WBA 1-4 LOST
Norwich - Ipswich 4-1 WON
.....................................................Newcastle - Chelsea 1-1 LOST

Updated statistic and list of bets.
Still deep in red.

Everton - WBA

Everton continue with annoying results in Premier. They’re without win in last four (three draws), have just two home wins of seven and sitting on very low for them 14th place. However, their performances look much better than results and I’m sure it’s a matter of time when they’ll start with the climbing on the table. The biggest problem recently is the lack of attacking support for Tim Cahill (scored five goals in his last eight games). Arteta and Pienaar work fine delivering from midfield, but Everton miss efficiency of the strikers. This should be a nice chance for Saha, Beckford and recovered Anichebe to recover the old shape. Moyes will miss only Fellaini who serves the last game of his suspension.

The Baggies are in free fall recently and currently I can’t see anything that could stop it. Four defeats and a draw in last five encounters caused they slipped from the 4th place (if my memory is right) to more expected 16th. They’ve kept only one clean sheet so far allowing at least two goals in four of their five previous games. Considering team quality, they’re probably worst in Premier (alongside Blackpool). First season syndrome and probably great motivation skills by Di Matteo caused an excellent run of results. Now WBA will hardly find something to boost their morale and they’ll face a hard fight for avoiding relegation. Their key man, Chris Brunt, is probably out with a groin problem. Morrison and Reid are also doubts for the game.

Despite Everton’s latest results, they should be superior here and this is a very nice opportunity for the start of a good run. Goodison is always a tough place to go. Home win for me.

Leicester and Everton - epilogue

Only losers complain about the bad luck and blame “outside factors” for their own failures. The thing is I cannot see who and with what tricks someone could make a profit last night in English games. Which is a very good sign my judging became terrible wrong. I’m facing so big crisis first time in my life and currently I’m only wasting my and money of the others. Only way out which I see is (to force myself) to make a break from betting. One weekend at least. It will be the first one in last 10 (or so) years I won’t make a single bet.

Thanks for visiting, sorry for the bad picks, I’ll be back soon.
With a hope in (and remembers on) better days,
Dule

Everton – Bolton

Everton are in a good run, in fact knowing Moyes’ work it should be a middle of a good run. Three wins and three draws in last six Premier games and all three draws came from the road (Fulham, Spurs and Blackpool). At Goodison, they’re a tough nut to crack for any (and it means any) Premiership side. The Toffees have lost only three of their last 22 Premier League matches and have won last four home games against Bolton without a conceding. Moyes will probably pick the same side from Blackpool’s draw, Rodwell and Fellaini should be on the bench.

Owen Coyle is doing a great job at Bolton with just two defeats in the past 11 rounds, there’s no doubt. And last round victory over Spurs was deserved without any doubt. My impression is his capability is limited with team’s. With players of that level is impossible to achieve anything higher than mid table position. If I try to find any bad side in his managing capability, it would be away games. The Trotters, as Burnley were doing under Coyle, most of the points collect at their Reebok Stadium. And I expect some kind of Spurs’ hangover in tonight’s game. After a great win, teams like Bolton usually fails in the next encounter. Coyle is without only long time sidelined Sean Davis, Joey O'Brien, Ricardo Gardner and Jlloyd Samuel.

p
Everton exited the crisis of results and finally look like a serious team. Hard working side, well covered on all positions. I fancy them to continue their good run and win this encounter.

Man City 0 - 2 Everton

Everton dented Manchester City's hopes of a Champions League place with a fully deserved win at Eastlands.
Tim Cahill scored a trademark header after a neat build-up between Mikel Arteta and Leighton Baines, who provided the cross.
City raised the tempo in the second half but after finding no way through, Arteta slotted home a fine second after a superb run from Jack Rodwell.
In the final stages both managers were sent to the stands as tempers frayed.
City boss Roberto Mancini raced to retrieve the ball, clattering into his opposite number David Moyes, sparking a melee on the sidelines and prompting referee Peter Walton to dismiss them both.
And after delivering Mancini his first defeat as City boss back in January, Moyes once more masterminded a fine victory for his side.
The Toffees, who have won their last two visits to the City of Manchester Stadium without conceding a goal, were again good for their win here and in the process ended City's unbeaten record at home this season.

WBA - Coventry 1-0

1-0 S. Reid  22.min

decent profit

Everton 2-0 Bolton

The simplest of Mikel Arteta free-kicks and a late Steven Pienaar strike handed Everton a seventh successive home league win as 10-man Bolton crumbled.
Bolton's Kevin Davies came closest in an uneventful first half but Tim Howard bravely saved after a flowing move.
The game turned with the 70th-minute dismissal of Gretar Rafn Steinsson, who bundled over Yakubu as the last man.
Arteta looped the resulting free-kick home and Leon Osman hit the post before Pienaar's powerful, decisive second.
With both teams in good form, neither manager saw fit to make changes to their starting line-up, but Everton boss David Moyes soon found his hand forced.
Everton manager David Moyes:
"We had the best of the play and we controlled most of the ball in the first half without being able to create in the final third.
"We needed a good Tim Howard save in the first half but we needed to be patient and we got our reward in the end.
"It was a great pass by Steven Pienaar to get Yakubu away - scoring the goal as well was a double whammy for Bolton, and it was a great free-kick.
"In the last few games, Mikel Arteta has been getting back to his best. He's nursing a couple of minor strains but he's so keen to keep going."
Bolton manager Owen Coyle:
"Yakubu took a great touch across Gretar Rafn Steinsson and invited Steinsson to come onto him. If there's a collision there's not a lot of contact, but Mr Wiley deemed it a red card.
"To rub salt into the wound, because I believe it was a contentious decision, Mikel Arteta was allowed to take the free-kick four yards closer than he should have been.
"I don't agree with the decision and with then allowing Arteta to bring the ball forward to the arc, with the quality he's got.
"We carried on the fight, accepting that Everton had chances, but I'm disappointed to leave with nothing. I felt we offered an awful lot to the game."
.

Sunderland 3 - 1 Birmingham

Sunderland claimed their second win in three games with a hard-fought victory over a spirited Birmingham.
The Black Cats were ahead as early as the fifth minute courtesy of a neat finish from Darren Bent from six yards.
The England striker made it 2-0 just six minutes later, finishing well after being fed in by Steed Malbranque.
Birmingham rallied well and on the hour Cameron Jerome ran clear to pull a goal back, but late on Fraizer Campbell's sliding finish sealed the home victory.
Having finally claimed their first win of 2010 with a 4-0 thrashing of Bolton on 9 March, Sunderland have, by the admission of manager Steve Bruce, begun to play with a greater freedom and style than at any other time during his tenure.
One of the chief individual beneficiaries of this has been striker Bent, who has recaptured his goalscoring touch in spectacular fashion to reinvigorate Sunderland's season and boost his chances of making Fabio Capello's squad for the World Cup this summer.

Everton - Bolton Wanderers

Considering recent form (especially at home), Everton are one of the top teams in Premier. When their injury crisis started to decrease, team’s shape improved and I fancy them to have a strong finish of the season. At home they’re unbeaten in eight league matches, winning the last six, including top sides like Man City, Chelsea and Man Utd. At last round, Everton lost 2-0 lead on the road vs. Brum, but display they showed was more than decent. David Moyes has no fresh injury concerns, but has to make at least one change following the expiry of Landon Donovan's loan. Everton have won their last three home league matches against Bolton without conceding a goal (scored six).

Since he became a manager, Owen Coyle made an excellent progress in the club and Bolton aren’t in the dangerous zone any more. Margin is eight points and Trotters probably will play last eight games without too much pressure. They’re in a decent shape, won three of last four games, but all three wins came against bottom sides (Wolves, West Ham and Wigan) and a defeat was vs. Sunderland 0-4. However, they’re poor travelers (trend that Coyle had in Burnley as well) with just one win (West Ham 2-1), one draw (Wigan 0-0) and five defeats under Coyle. Four goals scored and 16 conceded. Big boost could be a possible comeback of key defender Gary Cahill after six weeks. Another defender, Sam Ricketts is available after serving a one-match ban, while midfielder Mark Davies has recovered from injury.

Everton are in uptrend, they overcame the injury crisis, possess quality for top six in my opinion and they especially have big inspiration when play at Goodison. Bolton don’t have anything to lose in this encounter, but I think the difference in quality is too big and don’t expect anything less than a win with few goals margin. My bets are -1 ah (1.85 at Pinnacle) and Over 2.5 (1.83 at 888sports).

Tottenham 2 - 1 Everton

Tottenham moved into the Premier League top four with a hard-fought home victory over a determined Everton.

In-form Roman Pavlyuchenko put Spurs ahead when he tapped home a Jermain Defoe cross from six yards.
Everton rallied but could not make their pressure count and they fell two goals behind when Luka Modric curled in a superb, dipping shot.
Everton's Yakubu took advantage of keeper Heurelho Gomes' error to pull a goal back but an equaliser eluded them.
The win lifts Tottenham into the Champions League places at the expense of Manchester City, on goal difference, and strikes a blow to Everton's hopes of making a late top-four push following a period of good form.
The visitors - and American striker Landon Donovan in particular - will be left to rue missed opportunities to get something from the game.
Spurs' unlikely recent hero has been Russian striker Pavlyuchenko, who has come in from the cold and reaped the rewards with four goals in two games prior to this, including two in the FA Cup win over Bolton on Wednesday.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp:
"Overall I thought we played well and we were terrific at times in the first half.
"When you play Everton you know they are not going to give up.
"David (Moyes) obviously got into Everton at half time and they raised their game. At 2-1 we got edgy and we were defending for our lives at times."
Everton manager David Moyes:
"It was a game of two halves. Tottenham were better in the first and we were much better in the second.
"At half time we were dead and buried but I have to give the players credit for making a game of it.
"It (Donovan's miss) was a crucial moment for us and probably a crucial moment for Tottenham as well."

.

Liverpool 2 - 1 Blackburn

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres scored as Liverpool won a bad-tempered contest against Blackburn to move to within one point of fourth spot.
Gerrard put Liverpool ahead with a left-foot shot from six yards before Keith Andrews levelled from the spot after a Jamie Carragher handball.
An unmarked Torres slid home from close range to restore Liverpool's lead.
Gerrard and El-Hadji Diouf exchanged heated words before the break while Pepe Reina denied Chris Samba late on.
There is no love lost between Reds boss Rafa Benitez and Rovers counterpart Sam Allardyce - and little that happened on the pitch is likely to lead to any form of reconciliation.
Steven N'Zonzi should have been sent off after pushing Lucas in the face and there were a series of thunderous challenges during a fully committed contest that saw Benitez repeatedly complain to the fourth official.
It was far from vintage Liverpool and Rovers can consider themselves unfortunate to have left Anfield pointless.
But the Reds will be pleased to have returned to winning ways having failed to score in their previous two games.
Torres, who has been dogged by groin and knee injuries, was back in the starting XI for the first time since 13 January, and understandably not at his fluent best.
But there was an unmistakeable electricity around the ground every time the Spain striker was in possession.
And the fact that he and Gerrard both found the net ended a sequence of six Premier League games during which Dirk Kuyt had been the only Liverpool player to have scored.
The wait goes on for Rovers boss Sam Allardyce to earn his first win as a manager at Anfield, but there was plenty to suggest from his team's performance that they will climb the table during the remaining weeks of the season.

Tottenham - Everton

Spurs are currently fifth on the table with three points less than Man.City. They’re struggling on the road, but showing much better performances at White Hart Lane. At home, most problems they have had against defensively oriented teams like Hull (0-0), Wolves (0-1) and Stoke (0-1). At Friday, came news from Spurs’ camp they’re hit by a virus and 18 players and stuff are infected. But, it seems it was only Redknapp’s psychological warming-up for Everton. True is Palacios and Corluka are having some problems with a stomach bug and their appearance is doubtful. Real problem for “Arry” is the condition of Defoe and Crouch. Both will face a late fitness test and I expected one of them (Defoe more likely) to start the game alongside excellent Pavlyuchenko.

David Moyes crew was knocked from the Europe in Lisbon on a kind of humiliating way. Problem for him for today’s game is all players looked jaded after that game. Good thing for them is Everton turned the corner in Premier and overcame results crisis caused by large number of injuries. The Toffees have noticed just a single defeat (Liverpool away, 0-1) in last twelve games and in last two games at Goodison defeated giants (Chelsea 2-1 and Man.Utd. 3-1). They also won at last three league visits to White Hart Lane. So, despite European exit they definitely don’t lack with self confidence for today’s game. Beside fatigue, main problem for Moyes is missing of some very important players. Skipper Cahill, Fellaini and defenders Hibbert and Senderos. Good thing is Distin and Heitinga are available again and Jagielka already made his return. Everton have managed to keep only one clean sheet in their last nine league matches away from home and they have scored in 11 of their last 12 league games.

This is very important game for both sides. Spurs have huge attacking potential, but in last few games were showing some vulnerabilities in back line and just thankfully to Gomes and luck weren’t punished. Everton like to play against Spurs and I think Moyes won’t practice defensively 4-5-1. Despite the fact none of the last eight league games between these sides have been won by the home team I give an advantage to Spurs, but see goals at decent odds as a better option. Over.

Initial thoughts for Saturday

At the first glance, two games in England shouldn’t be overlooked.
Can’t see how Newcastle can lose at Walkers.Haven’t checked team news, but even 20 injuries wouldn’t change my opinion.Odds look generous. Will decide between dnb and away win.

Everton on the road against Wigan.Good thing about Toffees is their results follow the trend. When they have injuries and start sinking, run away from them. When start improving then should be backed. They have very good dressing room atmosphere that wasn’t shook with Cup exit.Although Sunderland’s performance is really awful in these days,I think Everton definitely have enough strength to defeat Wigan. The fact first goalie for Latics will be again Stojkovic suggests a big possibility of goals.Away win and over in this one.

Again it’s my initial thoughts, take it with caution. But it worth a small bets for me.

Everton 2 - 0 Burnley

Everton struck at the death to win at home for the first time since September and condemn 10-man Burnley to a ninth successive league game without a win.
Substitute James Vaughan turned home a Marouane Fellaini cross from close range with seven minutes remaining.
Steven Pienaar then sealed the win in injury time after being fed by Yakubu.
David Nugent hit the post for Burnley, but the turning point for the Clarets came when Stephen Jordan saw red for a second bookable offence on the hour.
Everton's victory, their first in the league since early November, ends a winless streak at Goodison Park stretching back to mid-autumn, when Blackburn were on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat.
More importantly for manager David Moyes, who could only watch with mounting dismay when his side's early-season lethargy was compounded by a wholesale injury crisis, Everton now lie 11th in the league table, five points clear of the relegation zone.
Having previously picked up just a solitary point on their travels, Burnley arrived on Merseyside with the worst away record in the division, but a battling performance belied that discouraging statistic.
Burnley gave a decent account of themselves throughout, so much so that - despite Everton's numerical advantage - the outcome remained in the balance until the dying minutes.

Everton manager David Moyes on James Vaughan:
"I am really pleased for James, who has had a terrible time with injuries for more than two years.
"This time he has come back without even a reserve run-out.
"He has missed much of his development, so we are just trying to nurse him through to get him back to what he was like as an outstanding teenager."
"We played really well in the first half but didn't get the goal our play merited.
"But overall we deserved the victory.
Burnley manager Owen Coyle on Everton's first goal:
"Yakubu was definitely offside, he is a big lad and our keeper could not see the play.
"Howard Webb is a good referee and he was in no position to see it, but he should expect to get assistance from his linesman, who could surely see.
"It influenced the game. I just want fair decisions and that was not fair.
"It's a mixture of emotions, frustration and anger, because we had opportunities to score the first goal of the game.
"But if we continue playing and performing as well as that, we'll be fine.

Everton - Burnley

For Toffees this season so far looks like endless nightmare. Instead a battle for Europe, Everton hold 14th place with 19 points from past 18 games. Although injury crisis has been shaking the club from the start and they had to play huge number of games, this season is under all expectations and even Moyes’ job isn’t safe anymore. Everton haven’t noticed a win in seven league games (last time vs. West Ham, away 1-0) and they’re without a win in six games at Goodison. Despite bad results, they have been putting a decent display lately, dressing room atmosphere is still high – players believe in better days, just need a first win to turn the corner. But, Moyes continues to have defensive problems, with Sylvain Distin and Joseph Yobo still not fit enough to return. Skipper Phil Neville could make his return after three months out with a knee injury.

.

After excellent start of the season, newcomers from Turf Moor felt in the crisis of results. They’re in the winless run of seven league games and hold 13th place (one point more than today’s opponent). On the road have taken just a single point from nine games (Man.City 3-3)! But, as Everton they’re performances are also above the results. In last two games on the road (two 0-2 defeats) were a little bit unlucky to get something from it. Against Pompey created plenty of real goal chances, but didn’t score, while vs. Wolves were short for a clear penalty kick and also missed few very good chances. Their main problem is attractive and offensive style of play that has brought some results at home, but on the road causes defense has been leaking too much goals. Manager Owen Coyle also has big defensive worries, as pair of central defenders, Clarke Carlisle and Steven Caldwell, missed the 1-1 draw against Bolton with groin strains and their appearance is in doubt.

.

This game looks like to be, or not to be for a home side. They desperately need a win and will host a team which has 8 defeats from 9 away games. On the other hand, Toffees still have lots of problems in back line with injuries. Neville is maybe fit but lacks in competitive games and his return could even cause additional problems behind. Burnley won’t defend, surely can score and make this game more interesting. I expect an open game, fight till the last minute and goals. Betfair offer 2.00, Pinnacle 1.94. Over.

Everton 2-2 Tottenham

Everton fought back from two goals down to earn a point with Tottenham, who missed an injury-time penalty.
Jermain Defoe slotted in the opener at the near post, and Michael Dawson made it 2-0 with a diving header.
Louis Saha volleyed in from eight yards to start Everton's comeback and Tim Cahill equalised when he stooped to head in Leighton Baines's cross.
Defoe had a chance to win it after Wilson Palacios was fouled but Tim Howard saved the striker's spot-kick.
It was a dramatic finale to a fine second half that swung one way and then another, but Spurs will be kicking themselves for throwing away a two-goal lead.
The Londoners had looked to be cruising to victory - and third place in the table - after producing the more creative football for much of the afternoon.
But Everton's never-say-die attitude paid off, and Howard's heroics meant the Toffees avoided a fourth consecutive league defeat.
Everton manager David Moyes:
"I thought we deserved a bit of luck and the goalkeeper helped it.
"The players had worked incredibly hard and had got stuck in. We tried to get something and because of that we earned some good fortune when it came around.
"I thought when it went to two each if anyone was going to make it 3-2 it was going to be us rather than Tottenham."
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp:
"We had control, we were 2-0 up and we couldn't see any danger. But suddenly they got a goal back, and Everton came on strong.
"We had a great opportunity to win the game with the last-minute penalty but it wasn't to be.
"It's frustrating, we threw away two points today."
