Wednesday's World Cup round-up

Uruguay's success has been enjoyed by the the people of the gritty mining city of Kimberley, where the quarter-finalists set up base camp high on South Africa's central plains at the launch of their campaign. So much so that the Uruguayan Football Association plans to develop the links forged by setting up coaching schemes in the area and inviting the best youngsters to Uruguay.
"I want to hug them. They have made us proud," said senior citizen Pulane Boikanyo, who was waiting for the Uruguayans to arrive for training ahead of Friday's quarter-final showdown with Ghana. The Dream Stays Alive - City Team Book Their Place in the Quarter, was the front-page headline in the local newspaper after Uruguay's 2-1 victory over South Korea in the previous round.

Manchester City's Argentina star Carlos Tevez is confident that his nation will beat Germany to secure a place in the last four - and believes previous opponents Mexico were a bigger threat.
"I was more afraid of Mexico than Germany because the Mexicans play better football - they took the ball from us in the first minutes of the first half and at the start of the second. We would have suffered more if we hadn't struck at the right moments," he told Argentine newspaper Clarin.

Netherlands striker Robin van Persie has defended his angry reaction to being substituted against Slovakia. Van Persie remonstrated with coach Bert van Marwijk when he was replaced by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar 10 minutes before the end of the 2-1 win and then took no part in the Dutch celebrations of Wesley Sneijder's late goal.
Van Persie said: "What I said to Van Marwijk was not over the top. I just want to be important to the team and score. I wanted to stay on as we would have had more space with Slovakia chasing an equaliser and I felt that I could profit from that."

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has insisted that his players will not be affected by the pressure of attempting to become the first African side to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
Speaking ahead of their match against Uruguay, he stated: "We are not thinking about the pressure. We have already proved that we are a team that knows how to compete. We will try to relax and are very happy with the whole situation. We have no obligation but still we want to use this opportunity to do our best and to make history."

Japanese prime minister Naoto Kan has issued a statement thanking his national team for their efforts following their World Cup exit in a penalty shoot-out against Paraguay.
"The players and the bench were united and showed the world the potential of Japanese soccer. I sincerely congratulate their efforts," he commented.

Paraguay - Japan, Lucas Barrios Man Of The Match @ 7.00 (bet365)  Honda is MOM!Feel I'm gonna puke!

.

Japan is a side without a minimum of creativity.Major threats are Honda and free kicks.I'm not at least impressed with their defense line as well.Only reasons is they're here are mentioned two and the fact they had a biggest rival in Denmark.

Paraguay,as all South Americans, play impressive so far.I'm not concerned with their draw vs. New Zealand, more with the fact they've progressed from the probably the weakest group. Key midfielder is suspended.

I think, this will be a tight game and not so sure about backing Paraguay in 90 mins.On the other hand, odd on them to qualify is a misery.Hm...My gambles have been a pure money wasting lately, but will try once again. Simply addicted.

.

Spain - Portugal, Spain @ 2.10 (William Hill)  1-0 WON

.

Spain played group games under their full potential, did just enough to secure 1st place. The things that worry me here are Torres who's completely out of form and Del Bosque who left his wingers on the bench in the previous game and adjusted Spain's play to Chile! (Miss to use advantage over 3 defenders in Chile's back line.) I'm really scary of his football philosophy,to be honest.Beside that,Spain looks as one of the top favorite to win WC (beside Brazil and Germany,I'd say).

Portugal has a tough defense,13 clean sheets in last 15 games. Not so great opponents though. They played a quiet game vs. Brazil and chose to face Spain (I still don't understand why). They look fine, will be as always when play Spain fully motivated,but...In my opinion, class difference is obvious. And in such type of a games, mental strength (can easily imagine CR to get red) will have important role.

Maybe my bet is not so based on the facts, but really can not imagine any other outcome than Spain's win in a regular time.

Tuesday's World Cup round-up

Argentina playmaker Lionel Messi has agreed a double or quits bet with coach Diego Maradona that he scores against in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Germany. Messi bet Maradona he would score against Mexico in the previous round, although he has since refused to reveal the size of the stake
Maradona has also made it clear that Messi has a free role. He said: "Nobody ever told me where to play. So, I shouldn't have to tell Messi where to play either. It's up to him to decide where to play. He's a grown-up. I did it back in my era - and now it's his turn."

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan needed an ice pack after hurting his ankle in training on Monday but officials expect him to recover in time for Friday's quarter-final against Uruguay. Black Stars defender Hans Sarpei is also reportedly carrying a leg injury.
Meanwhile, Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has revealed Italian side Lazio are interested in signing him from Portsmouth. He stated: "Lazio want me. I know about their interest but I don't want to think about it. For now, I just want to do well in South Africa."

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez, whose side have impressed so far and beat South Korea in the second round, believes he is reaping the benefit of the majority of his players plying their trade overseas.
He said: "Most of the squad joined the national squad when they were still playing in Uruguay at around 22 years of age. Four years later, almost all of them are playing at important clubs overseas and they are capitalising on that experience of playing high-level football abroad."

Guus Hiddink thinks Sepp Blatter should only continue as Fifa president if he is prepared to allow the introduction of goal-line technology and video replays in order to avoid future controversies.
The former Netherlands boss, now in charge of Turkey's national side, stated: "Sepp Blatter should announce tomorrow that video replays will be implemented, or he needs to resign."

Fit-again Netherlands winger Arjen Robben does not believe he is back to his best yet, despite returning to the starting line-up with a man-of-the-match performance in the 2-1 victory against Slovakia.
Robben, who had been out with a calf injury, said: "It was a great feeling to start the game. I am not yet at my top level but I was pretty confident."

Holland - Slovakia, Slovakia to score first @ 3.75 (bet365)  LOST

The Dutch played a perfect qualifications and started WC with all 3 wins and just a single goal conceded (after a doubtful penalty). However, they have a long list of failures on big competitions after underestimations of the opponents and this time they're already seen in a quarter clash against Brazil.Robben is fit,but same as Rooney and Torres and I don't expect (still) great performances from him.

Slovakia made a first class surprise, now they're full of self confidence and can play without any pressure. In a positional game however, they don't have too much chances and it would be only a matter of final result.I expect not so defensive Slovakia and who knows, maybe Weiss got some silly idea to attack Holland.

Class difference is obvious, just I don't see Holland at 1.40 worth of backing and easily can imagine this game going in the wrong way.A gamble for me.

Bets for tonight will follow.Stay tuned.

Brazil - Chile, Brazil -1ah @ 2.08 (bet365)  3-0 WON
red card in the game - yes @ 3.00 (bet365)
 NO LOST

Brazil is top favorite to win WC.In group games, only against Ivory Coast they showed a piece of the full potential.Dunga rested Kaka,Robinho and Elano, all 3 will be in the squad tonight. Both teams know each other very well and I'd exclude any tactical surprise.Brazil likes to play against Chile,6 win in a row,5 of those were with 2 or bigger winning margin. In last 5,Brazil scored 21 goals(!),conceded just 3.

Chile looked good in the group games.Despite two 1-0 wins, they play very attacking.Bielsa forces some little weird formation, with 3 players in a defense line.Del Bosque made a stupid decision, left his wingers on the bench and actually adjusted Spain's game to Chile's,which was scandalous in my opinion.Dunga won't be making such favors. Also,Bielsa will be without his 2 key defenders.

Chile is good enough to keep Brazilians fully focused. Can't see any sign of a surprise. Also,Chile's disciplinary record suggests a big possibility it won't ended peacefully.

Monday's World Cup round-up

Netherlands midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst feels his side can go on to win the World Cup.
"I do believe we will become world champions," said 35-year-old Van Bronckhorst ahead of his side's last-16 tie with Slovakia in Durban on Monday.
The Dutch topped Group E and were one of only two teams to qualify from the group stages with three wins.

Prince Harry says he watched England's 4-1 defeat by Germany through his fingers.
The 25-year-old royal - who viewed the game in New York, where he took part in a polo match - was understandably disappointed with the result.
"The defeat was sore, I think the boys played their hearts out," said Harry, who saw England draw 0-0 with Algeria earlier in the tournament in South Africa.

Uruguay - Korea Republic, Uruguay -0.75ah @ 2.19 (188bet)  2-1 1/2 WIN

Uruguay looked really good in all of 3 group games.Defense line isn't the big problem as it was predicted, more than decent midfield and great Forlan in front, supported by Suarez. Also, they look fine under the pressure, tactically organized...I like their chances in this game, but in the next one as well.

.

Korea played a great match against Greece (terrible Greec,I'd say),then 1-4 vs. Argies and shocker against Nigeria. Both goals they conceded against Africans were big mistakes by defense line. They have a good pace,Parks (I mean both) are dangerous, they still have some good habits left from Hiddink's time...But no,I can't imagine them in the next round.

Uruguay is a clear favorite here and I expect a safe win.2-0 correct score.

Saturday's World Cup round-up

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has rivalled Eric Cantona in the oddest football soundbite stakes with a beauty about maintaining the balance between attack and defence.
Ahead of his side's last-16 match with South Korea, he said: "There's a saying among coaches that football is like a short blanket: it covers your head or it covers your feet, and if it covers your head, your toes are in the air."

France striker Thierry Henry has hinted he feels karma may have had a role in his country's disastrous World Cup campaign.
Henry helped secure France's place in the tournament when his handball went unpunished and led to the goal that beat the Republic of Ireland in a play-off.
But after France finished bottom of their group in South Africa, with only one point from three games, Henry said: "They always say you get what you deserve."

United States coach Bob Bradley believes his side can capitalise on finishing top of their group, ahead of England, by reaching the final.
Bradley's side take on Ghana in the round of 16, with the winner facing either Uruguay or South Korea in the quarter-finals.
"If we continue to build on the successes so far we can go to the end," Bradley said.
"We try hard not to get ahead of ourselves but at the same time everybody has this idea that if everybody gives their best effort, if everybody puts everything they have into it and if things go our way then we can travel far."

Portugal - Brazil, Correct score Brazil to win 1-0 @ 7.00 (888sports)  0-0 LOST

With all due respect to Portugal,it will be a matter of Brazil only. They don't need a win, probably some fringe players will get a chance. And Dunga is not Maradona,he doesn't care about 9 points, sending a message to public and such things. If Brazil doesn't win WC he'll be crusified (as Maradona if fails). So,a draw would be fine for him.On the other hand, although Brazil looks tactically perfect, playing for a draw carries some risk. And that risk is second top favorite for winning WC!

Portugal will try to compete,CR will perform some of his tricks, but they're safe as Ivory Coast won't do too much (surely won't win by 9).They'll be playing on the same way as they did against them.

I expect a tough game and Brazil to nick one in the 2nd half.

.

UPDATE I:

Chile - Spain, Spain -1ah @ 1.93 (Pinnacle)  1-2 DRAW

Chile won both games 1-0 against two defensive sides.Today they need not to lose by more than 1 (my assumption is Switzerland won't win by 2 or more).Problem is they can't adjust their attacking style of play to opponent. It works when they're favorites, but against Brazil in their qualifications it brought 7 conceded goals in 2 games.3 players in defense line make them vulnerable on the flanks (tonight, vulnerable to Silva,Mata,Navas,Villa...).And I'm not sure playing pressing against Spain will bring them anything good.

After two games,I have impression that Spain has much more potential than they've been showing so far.First game was a bad luck imo,in second only their arrogance and selfishness each to other stopped them not to score few more. Now they feel a fire under the feet and it's the final time to become serious.

Personally don't like Del Bosque and big expectations brought some pressure, but I think they're simply too strong to end WC in a group.

Friday's World Cup round-up

England will wear their all-red kit when they take on Germany in the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday.
As the designated away team, it was always likely England would be forced to wear their changed strip in Bloemfontein, as they did against Slovenia.
But Fabio Capello's side have again elected to wear red shorts, as opposed to the white ones they originally intended to adorn their away strip.

An England fan who berated the players after wandering into the team's dressing room after the 0-0 draw with Algeria will appear in court today.
Pavlos Joseph, 32, from Crystal Palace, south-east London, will appear at a special World Cup court in Cape Town where he is due to go on trial charged with trespassing.
At a previous hearing, he was banned from attending future World Cup matches, his passport was withheld, and he was released on 500 rand bail.
Joseph said he was looking for a toilet after the Algeria match when a security guard sent him in the direction of the players' tunnel.

Japanese football fans celebrated wildly after their side stunned Denmark 3-1 to reach the second round of the World Cup - with police called to fish revellers out of rivers.
Newspaper headlines boasted of "history in the making" after the Blue Samurai reached the last 16 for the second time, while television viewing figures nudged past 41 percent, despite the game finishing just before 0530 local time.

Ivory Coast boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has tipped the African side to become a force in world football, even if they are eliminated from the World Cup on Friday.
To secure an unlikely place in the last 16, Ivory Coast would need to beat North Korea in their final Group G game and hope Brazil beat Portugal, while Eriksson's men also need to make up nine goals in the process.
"The players are getting better and better and as a team we are getting better and better," said Eriksson.
"Whatever happens, Ivory Coast has a great future as a football team. I am really impressed with all the players we have."

About Serbia. I think it's fair to say we're level of Denmark, for example. Chile, Paraguay, Mexico, USA, second class of world football. To make something with that amount of quality, you have to be brave. Like mentioned selections. We were not and didn't deserve to play on the higher level. Wasn't matter of luck.

Thursday's World Cup round-up

An attempt by a New Zealand lawmaker to create a public holiday to mark the achievements of the country's team in the World Cup team has been rejected by the nation's parliament.
Labour Party minister Trevor Mallard tried to introduce a bill that would have created a public holiday after New Zealand's final group match against Paraguay on Thursday.
The All Whites can seal their place in the last 16 with a win, and even a draw may be good enough.
The game will be shown in the early hours of the morning in New Zealand and Mallard said loyal football fans deserved a day off as a reward for supporting their team.
However, government members opposed the introduction of the bill and it was thrown out of the house in barely 15 seconds.

Australia - Serbia, NO BET

I have some ugly feeling,we'll make a circus show tonight (once again). To finish the job and win easily, simply isn't in our nature.I'm afraid they'll be killing our nerves, make a draw and progress as second.1-1 for example, from a goal down.Just hope Antic won't get some stupid idea about resting players with yellow cards (six, all except Subotic are key players),before we even qualify (some of his thoughts lead in that direction).
One of my betting principles is not to bet on my teams.Broke that twice and both times lost.No bet for me,this time.

.

UPDATE I:

Slovenia - England, Total cards, over 5ah @ 2.00 (bet365) 4 cards LOST

Something definitely is wrong with this England team.At the first moment,I thought it's a part of Don Fabio (Italian) tactic, where after sloppy two (or even three) games in the group, team reach the final. But,hard discipline is one thing and cameras in the players' rooms something else.Terry's press conference pointed a bad atmosphere.Capello after last game said that players were fearing of a failure.Against Algeria?!Come on people,be serious. What if they face Germany in the next round (very possible)? They would feel confident?
Slovenia is much stronger selection than Algeria.Their important characteristic is they like to shoot from the distance, where is English confidence against questionable, since the recent goalkeeping problem.
Let me clear,England is a serious favorite here but 1.45 doesn't represent a true risk. And personally won't be too much surprised to see them eliminated.I expect a nervous game and choose a bet on cards.

P.S.:Could anyone explain me,what is exactly Beckham's role on the bench, along Capello and players?

.

UPDATE II:

USA - Algeria, USA -0.75ah @ 2.17 (Betsson SB)  1-0  1/2WIN

Yanks are a decent squad.Maybe little lack in technique, but they're great runners. In previous two games, started to play after went a goal down (two down, against Slovenia).I guess they've learned a lesson. They need a win to progress and avoiding Germans should be a good reason to put some extra effort and score more than one.
I think bookies overreacted here, once again.Algeria played a draw, but they weren't great just England was awful. They'll put a decent fight and won't be afraid (because the draw,of course). If they concede first, they'll go in front as they have some theoretical chance for progress.

.

UPDATE III:

Ghana - Germany, Germany -1.5ah @ 2.45 (The Greek)  1-0 LOST

Germans have made a very good impression on me and can see them even in final.Only problem is they're very young and could crash under the pression at one moment.(I guess with Ballack, they'd look like a bloody nightmare.)And maybe a problem could be a coach Low.As I wrote once, don't like him from the start. He has great defenders, but against Serbia put heavy-weight Badstuber on the position of left-back to watch on our fastest player Krasic.Normally,he overlooked that thin, little detail on the press conference (we scored after Krasic's run and crossing, actually),but didn't miss a chance to moan for a bad luck,(what bad luck, you creep?!Sorry.) at the same time messing Serbs with Bosnians and Croats.

Ghana is decent African team.Bad sides are they lack in technique and discipline (Muntari was dumped from the camp, then rejoined).Good sides.First one is not a problem, they're athletes-physhically superior. But,they're runners. To explain with a different words.Against Germany, our (Serbian) main task was not to get involved in the run across the pitch! They're Germans, nobody can beat them in running. Our players, even with a player more, were trying to keep the pace down.Ghana can't transform their play so much.Rajevac said the most important thing is not to concede!Really?!

Germany maybe will be nervous and that's the only Ghana's advantage. If Germany score,Ghana will go all-in and will be doomed, while Germany wouldn't like to keep a minimal lead.2-0,3-0 correct score.

Many interesting bets for the outcome of World Cup. I chose two, for now.

.

Name of the finalists:

Brazil - Germany @ 17.00 (bet365)

.

Group betting:

1st USA, 2nd England @ 4.33

1st Spain, 2nd Switzerland @ 4.00

1st Argentina, 2nd S.Korea @ 1.61

A treble @ 28.00 (bet365)

.

UPDATE I:

Greece - Argentina, NO BET

.

I think we all can agree that "Argentina B" (which means Millito and Aguero alongside Messi, probably Di Maria and Maxi on the flanks) is still much stronger than Greek full and highly motivated squad.
The thing that fears me most is the idea Argies will play more for fun than for the result.Attractive and nice to watch, but not so responsible in defense tasks (especially mentioned five).
Other thing is Otto Rehhagel.German who won EURO with his hard-to-watch defensive football.Counter attacks and set pieces are the only way to score. So,in combination with my first reason I could imagine very complicate scenario here.
I don't say Argentina won't smash them, but simply don't like those odds. Will skip this one.

.

UPDATE II:

Mexico - Uruguay, Uruguay to win @ 5.00 (Bet3000)  0-1 WIN

The point of a draw is both sides will pass the group.Ok,what Mexico thinks about it?Maybe they can win, they defeated France and are full of confidence. But,they should accept a draw and face Argentina instead Korea probably?!Nah,doesn't sound like Mexico.Even if they lose, probability to be eliminated is very low as France won't trash anybody today.
Other thing,if one side score (it's hardly to imagine a game without any chance,at least because the fear of UEFA president),they should just allow other to score?He-he Mexico and Uruguay?Hell,no.
We already have seen 2-2 draw once, but this sides? No,I don't think so.
Winner will have a red carpet to a quarter-final(and I hope Serbia he-he),loser gets top favorite.
I'm gonna take Uruguay.

.

UPDATE III:

South Africa - France, South Africa +0.25ah @ 2.08 (188bet)  2-1 WIN

.

This is a kind of speculative bet.
Home side will try to not the end competition without a win (in theory, they have even a chance to be 2nd).That,also should be a slap to FIFA board that gave them to host WC.Blatter has been talking rubbish for years and now his favorites will be last in the group.Funny,at least.
Happenings in the French camp are surely a shame for their nation.I don't feel bad about it,they didn't even deserve to be there.Starting 11 will be interesting.Evra allegedly has refused(!!!) to play. His example probably will follow some other players.
And last thing, referee is Oscar Ruiz (Colombia).

.

UPDATE IV:

Nigeria - S.Korea, S.Korea -0.25ah @ 2.10 (188bet)  2-2 1/2 LOST

No big philosophy here. Korea is better squad, looks tactically better and organized. Nigeria didn’t show anything special, so far. Except, lack of discipline. Tonight, need a win (for Korea, a point should be fine). Attacking attitude will make them vulnerable to Korea's fast counters, through the wings. Park will score.

Tuesday's World Cup round-up

Argentina coach Diego Maradona has said that Brazil are his favourites to win the World Cup while downplaying his side's hopes of winning a third title.
Impressive wins against Nigeria and South Korea mean Argentina need only one point from their final group game against Greece on Tuesday to reach the last 16 but Maradona is refusing to get carried away.
"I don't want to be favourites, not before coming to South Africa and not now," he said. "We're here to keep our fans happy, to play the way we want to play, and I think things so far are going well.
"Brazil can play badly but still win games, that's why they are still the great favourites."

North Korea television was quick to gloss over their side's humiliating 7-0 defeat by Portugal on Monday that eliminated them from the World Cup.
Billed as a revenge match against the side that knocked them out of the 1966 World Cup at the quarter-final stage, it was the first game to be aired live in a communist country that exerts strict control over media coverage.
However, hopes of avenging the 5-3 defeat from 44 years ago, in North Korea's only other trip to the World Cup, were extinguished by six second-half Portuguese goals.
"The Portuguese won the game and now have four points. We are ending our live broadcast now," a Korean Central Broadcasting commentator said, quickly cutting to footage of factory workers and engineers praising North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami is hoping his Switzerland team-mates can keep his World Cup dream alive following his sending off in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat by Chile.
The 25-year-old will miss Friday's final Group H game against Honduras as the Swiss attempt to make the most of their opening 1-0 win over Spain to book their place in the last 16.
The group is extremely tight but if Switzerland beat Honduras by more than one clear goal it will guarantee their progress.

www.bbc.co.uk

WC 2010 - 21.06.

Portugal - Korea DPR, Portugal -1ah @ 1.72 (Pinnacle)  7-0 WIN

Bookies overreacted here after Koreans put a fanatical fight against Brazilians. But true is, beside that they don’t have too much to offer. Portugal needs a win to reach the 2nd spot and they need to score few because goal difference will probably be decisive.

Chile - Switzerland, corner handicap Chile -1ah @ 1.85 (bet365) 5-3 WIN

Chile defeated Honduras in previous game with a minimal margin, but they missed several very good chances. They carry attacking style of play and today will be stronger for their best player (and best scorer) Suazo.

Swiss shocked Spain with very good defensive display. Hitzfeld is great coach, they’re well organized, tactically perfect and shouldn’t be underestimated by anyone. Will miss best player Frei and I think they’ll be playing on the same way as vs. Spain.

I fancy South Americans and think Chile will dominate here. I’ll take corner handicap.

Spain - Honduras, Spain -2ah @ 2.02 (bet365)  2-0 DRAW

Interesting thing is, despite the shock, Spain wasn’t so bad. They still remain as one of the favorites, but now they could easily miss the first spot. Which brings Brazil in the next round. They’ll try to score as much as possible for the self confidence, but also for a goal difference that could be very important.

Don’t have too much to say about Honduras. Considering quality, they’re probably number 4 in the group. Will try to put a decent fight, but they’re facing a raging Spain.

Monday's World Cup round-up

Euro 2008 champions Spain have been warned by goalkeeper Jose Reina that they cannot afford to "live off the past" as they prepare for Monday's make-or-break World Cup match against Honduras.
He said: "This side has been playing for five years together, I think we've been doing things well and doing a good job but we can't live off our past - we have to prove again more than ever that we can be in that group of teams who can win the World Cup and we have to recover from the defeat by Switzerland."

New Zealand Herald correspondent Michael Brown has called his country's 1-1 draw with Italy "mind-blowing".
He wrote: "Little, old New Zealand with just 25 professional footballers - Italy has 3541. A country which had played just four World Cup matches before this morning drew with one which has won four World Cup titles. Crazy."
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said of the result: "The All Whites have surprised everybody and stunned the footballing world."

North Korea will broadcast its World Cup match against Portugal live on Monday evening, its official television station said.
The Korean Central TV Broadcasting Station aired only recorded footage of the team's first group match against Brazil and the last time a North Korea game was shown live to the nation was the World Cup qualifier against Iran in June 2009.

Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has come out in support of his Chelsea team-mate Nicolas Anelka after he was kicked out of France's World Cup squad.
Anelka was sent home after a verbal assault on France coach Raymond Domenech
Drogba, quoted on news24.com in South Africa, said: "He has been a team-mate for two-and-a-half years. Yes, I support him. I wish him good luck, it's a difficult time for him. He is very strong mentally, he's a competitor. I was surprised he was kicked out of the team."

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has criticised the France team - only a week after he launched an attack on England.
In a column for a South African newspaper, the ex-Germany skipper and World Cup winner said: "Everyone must have realised that there was something wrong with the French team following their 2-0 defeat to Mexico. Everyone in the team seemed to be playing for themselves. They were lifeless."
Beckenbauer caused controversy last week when he attacked England over their playing style after the 1-1 draw with the United States.
But after England's 0-0 draw with Algeria he said: "I am not going to criticise England this time because all the bigger teams have taken a step backwards."

Sunday's World Cup round-up

Graham Taylor is convinced goalkeeper David James' terse responses to questions about Fabio Capello's selection policy were a clear indication that all is not well in the England camp.
Former England boss Taylor said: "I know David very well because we signed him as a young player at Watford many years ago. He is very articulate and he was giving us a message there, make no mistake. That was a message that all is not right."
Although he has vowed not to resign and has stood by some controversial team selections, under-fire Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen is facing media criticism following the Indomitable Lions' early exit from the World Cup.

After it was suggested to the Frenchman that his tactics were to blame for defeats against Japan and Denmark, Le Guen simply replied: "I will not resign but you have given your opinion and I respect that. Either you trust me or you don't, but that's the way things are."

A top public university in Bangladesh has closed indefinitely after students clashed over whether to cancel classes in order to watch the World Cup. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology reportedly asked students to leave dormitories to calm the situation, after at least five people were injured in violent disturbances.

One group had demanded an early summer vacation so they could watch football on television without any tension. They asked other students not to attend classes or take tests and locked the university's main gate, prompting clashes with senior students who wanted classes to continue.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes a fear of failure and the absolute necessity to get through the group stage has contributed to the poor performances of top European sides at the World Cup.
Wenger said: "The biggest teams who have the highest level of expectation cannot express that talent yet. One reason is caution, fear of failure, response to huge demands. These teams will just get through, most of them, then you will see them really play."

Australia forward Harry Kewell is adamant he did not deserve to be sent off for handling the ball on the line during his team's 1-1 draw against Ghana.
Kewell told the Sydney Morning Herald: "Everyone that's seen it is saying: 'Fair enough, it's a penalty'. But was it deliberate? Of course not." And coach Pim Verbeek added: "What is he supposed to do, cut his arm off?"

Television viewing figures suggest the United States public have embraced the World Cup. Twice as many Americans are believed to have watched the first five games of the tournament compared with four years ago.

Slovenia's Robert Koren insists his side will not play for a draw against England on Wednesday, even though a point would be enough to take them through to the last 16 - probably at the expense of Fabio Capello's men.
Koren, whose club future is in doubt now his West Brom contract has expired, said: "We will do everything in our power against England. We will try to win."

Saturday's World Cup round-up

Reports in the American media suggest the referee who disallowed a last-gasp goal for the United States in their 2-2 draw against Slovenia may have taken charge of his last match at this World Cup.
Fifa sources have apparently suggested that Malawian official Koman Coulibaly's performance in the Group C encounter is to be assessed by the governing body's refereeing committee, and he may not be assigned any more games in the competition.

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will have an operation after the World Cup on the back problem which could rule him out of the rest of the tournament. It means he could miss up to four months of the Italian domestic season.
Buffon, who was substituted in his team's opening group match against Paraguay, has a herniated disc and will not feature against New Zealand. The 32-year-old has delayed surgery in the hope of playing some further part in South Africa.

Didier Drogba is being tipped to start for the Ivory Coast in their match against Brazil on Sunday after making a steady recovery from a fractured elbow.
"Do not be surprised if Drogba starts," said coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who brought the Chelsea striker on as a second-half substitute in the 0-0 draw with Portugal.

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has defended coach Dunga's abrasive style - and likened him to Jose Mourinho, who led Italian side Inter Milan to the treble last season.
Julio Cesar, who played under Mourinho at the San Siro, said: "Dunga is only putting in place a work philosophy. Mourinho did exactly the same as what Dunga is doing now. We won everything with this work philosophy."

France midfielder Jeremy Toulalan has admitted that his side have failed to operate as a team in South Africa, despite having a number of talented individuals.
The French, beaten by Mexico in their last match, are struggling to make the second round and Toulalan said: "The difference between us and Mexico is that they are playing as a team, and we have 11 individuals. We have high-quality players. What we missed was being a collective on the pitch."

Germany coach Joachim Loew remains convinced his team will still progress to the second round despite the shock defeat against Serbia that means a loss against Ghana could eliminate them from the competition.
"It is obvious that we are going to be under more pressure now, but we will make the round of 16," insisted Loew, who admitted to being "devastated" by the Serbia result.

Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz believes Paraguay are capable of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in the country's history.
"We want to go at least to the quarter-finals. In Paraguayan history it's never been done," declared the striker, who came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Italy.

Germany - Serbia, over 2.5 @ 2.10 (Expekt) 0-1 LOST

We played an awful game against Ghana and deservedly lost thankfully to bad display and shocking tactic by Antic. Today we’ll put our best effort, but true is we usually can’t cope with Germans. To make the situation even worse, we have to win. And attacking Germans could be very unpleasant. Antic will probably set cautious 4-5-1 to wait for counter attacks or set pieces. That will work until we concede. I never bet against my team and will choose goals instead.

Slovenia - USA, NO BET

Both sides made positive results after terrible mistakes by goalkeepers. USA is in little bit better position (play Algeria in last round), they have, in my opinion, better team and they wouldn’t be disappointed with a draw today. 2.10 is to low for USA and I will pass this.

.

UPDATE:

Serbia won!!! Fantastic! We're crazy people, definitely! Red card for Germans and huge amount of luck were necessary! Game was a bloody horror movie!

.

England - Algeria, England -2ah @ 2.70 (Betsson SB) 0-0 LOST

England will be like a wounded lion. Their self confidence is damaged and will try to send the message, win with 3-4 goals margin. Green has made the same mistake (!) on the training session and will be replaced by James. I expect Crouch alongside Rooney.

Algeria is too poor to do anything, I think. Will try to frustrate Englishmen, but I can not see how they can resist.

Friday's World Cup round-up

Former France captain Zinedine Zidane has criticised coach Raymond Domenech after the 2-0 defeat by Mexico which left Les Bleus on the brink of World Cup elimination.
Zidane, a member of France's 1998 World Cup-winning team, believes Domenech got his selection wrong by demoting Yoann Gourcuff to the bench, depriving the side of a creative spark.
"The coach made the decision but I don't agree with it," Zidane told Mexican television station Televisa. "I am disappointed because France did not have a single shot on goal and that should be the least to be expected. Mexico were superior to France, especially physically."

Captain Patrice Evra said it felt like France were a "small football nation - and it hurts" after Thursday's defeat by Mexico.
"It's a catastrophe, that's all we can say. We are not a great team," said Evra, who was part of the side which suffered an early exit at Euro 2008. "When you are knocked out of the European Championship in the first round and you are also capable of being knocked out in the first round of the World Cup, you just don't want to think about football after that."

Injured England defender Rio Ferdinand has told his England team-mates: "You can still win the World Cup."
"We still have a great chance of winning the World Cup," Ferdinand told The Sun. "No team can claim to be the outright favourites. There is no one who scares us. I'm sure we'll beat Algeria. I've played with these players for years and know how good they are."

Senior Cameroon players have asked coach Paul Le Guen to reconsider his team selection for the Group E match against Denmark on Saturday.
Defender Song made a substitute appearance against Japan
Cameroon's players are unhappy because Le Guen omitted seasoned campaigners like defenders Rigobert Song and Geremi and midfielder Alexandre Song from the Japan game, which they lost 1-0.
"What we have seen in recent games, which we think is unfortunate, is that many young fresh players have been introduced into the team at the expense of experienced ones," said midfielder Achille Emana.

United States captain Carlos Bocanegra said his team will not be underestimating Slovenia just because they lack household names.
The former Fulham defender said: "We have some personal experience against these guys. A few play in Germany, a few in France, just because they're not in the Premier League we're still familiar with these guys. We are not going to take them lightly just because some people might not know the names as well."

Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong is confident his team can win the World Cup in South Africa.
Ahead of Saturday's Group E clash with Japan, De Jong said: "We just have to deliver this World Cup. We have got enough quality to do it."

Former Tottenham manager Osvaldo Ardiles, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 1978, says he wants to be Australia's new national coach.

Dutchman Pim Verbeek will vacate the position after the tournament and Football Federation Australia is seeking a big-name candidate to replace him.

Argentina - Korea, Argentina -1ah @ 2.03 (188 bet)  4-1 WON

I still think Argentina’s national team will be a victim of one El Pibe’s tactical mistake. Lack of defenders, for example, could work well against average teams. Problem is every top class and hard working side will punish it, Spain, Brazil, Germany… But, Korea… No, I don’t think so. Difference in quality is huge. Korea will try to threat from counter attacks, they’re fast and Samuel (for example) could have some problems, but it’s nothing in compare with problems of Korea’s defenders. No question for me, here. Maradona will rest Veron and send Maxi Rodriguez on the pitch.

Greece - Nigeria, Nigeria @ 2.22 (Pinnacle)  2-1 LOST

Greece wasn’t bad against Korea, they were terrible, disaster, worst thing in WC so far. They play very slow and predictable. Main players are old and their tactic thankfully to which they won EURO, (fortunately) doesn’t work any more. My sympathies are always on the side of Greece and Greek people, but with a play like this they don’t have a chance against any side in SA (except against the hosts, maybe).

Nigeria actually played better than anybody expected. Goalie saved them several times against Argies, but they didn’t look bad, passing was good, tactical positioning as well. They’re physically stronger and differently from Greek, like climate conditions in SA. Another good thing for them is Greeks have to play less defensive as they’ll face Argentina in the last round. Martins is expected for Nigeria from the start.

.

UPDATE:

France - Mexico, France @ 2.29 (Canbet)  2-0 LOST

Because the way how they qualified, I would like to see French lads on the plane as soon as possible. Against Uruguay, they played a boring draw which doesn’t promise a great achievement. Also, war in the dressing room (and on the pitch!) between two stubborn sides doesn’t help. As well as the news Domenech is ex coach (will be in charge till the end of WC). However, one glance on the starting eleven makes me feel scary. Defeat would send them home. Referee is Al Ghamdi, lad from S.Arabia and I expect some “mistakes” in favor to France and Platini.

Mexico’s games are nice to watch. Good technique, passing and offensive style of play, some very talented players. Unfortunately, playing like that they’re not competitive on this level and simply look to weak physically.

I’m going to back France.

.

P.S.: Yesterday was the biggest attendance on the blog this year! Thanks for visiting, lads!

If you like my predictions and analyzes, don't agree somewhere, like my site or don't, leave comment or a chat box message. Thanks, again.

Thursday's World Cup round-up

Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas faced an awkward post-match inquisition from his girlfriend Sara Carbonera, a sideline reporter for the Telecinco channel, following the defeat by Switzerland. During a post-match interview, the journalist asked Casillas: "How did you manage to muck it up?"
And a shocked Casillas replied: "I don't know what to say. I don't know if this defeat will have consequences. The dressing room is fed up."

Switzerland's Gelson Fernandes was as surprised as everyone else after scoring the winning goal in his team's historic World Cup triumph over Spain.
The St Etienne midfielder's strike seven minutes into the second half of Wednesday's Group H match proved enough for Ottmar Hitzfeld's side to beat the European champions - and left Fernandes stunned.
"I don't think I realise what is happening right now," said the 23-year-old. "I'm a bit surprised. It's a very special moment for our country and I'm very happy. We were definitely very good against Spain and we played very well as a team."

Argentina coach Diego Maradona has again called on referees to protect flair players such as Lionel Messi in the World Cup, urging officials to be even stricter with offending opponents.
Maradona said Messi is twice as good as any other player at the World Cup
"If we are going to see a match when the star players are not going to be mistreated then I think the referees need to be a lot stricter, and if Korea's players do something to Messi or Carlos Tevez then they need to get out the yellow cards, and if it happens a second time, then that's it," said Maradona.

Greece striker Theofanis Gekas is the latest player to call for World Cup organisers to ban vuvuzelas. Gekas was irritated by the noise in their opening game against South Korea, which his side lost 2-0.
"I do think the trumpets should be stopped. They are affecting the players as we cannot communicate properly," he stated.

Ivory Coast striker Salomon Kalou has called on his team take inspiration from North Korea's resilient defensive display against Brazil where they lost 2-1.
Ivory Coast play Brazil on Sunday and the 24-year-old said: "I saw the first half of their match and North Korea defended really well and annoyed Brazil, they serve as a good example. We have the players who can make a difference, our strength will always be in attack but we must focus on defence."

Chile -0.5 (1.725)  1-0 won

Spain win to nil (1.83) 0-1 lost

double @ 3.16 (bet365) LOST

.

Honduras - Chile

Honduras came to this tournament after sensational USA’s equalizer against Costa Rica in last qualification round. Few decent players, Wilson Palacios and David Suazo are their keys. Civil war in the country will push the players to reach the ultimate limits.

Chile was second South American team, right behind Brazil. Decent coach, Marcelo Bielsa, carries attacking style of play. Best player and top goal scorer, Humberto Suazo, is under the question mark for today’s game. Since the odds on Chile have been rising, seems he’ll be on the bench. Which is actually good because he’s not fit anyway.

I haven’t had too many opportunities to watch these two teams, so I’m taking this as a part of double. Think Chile will be too much for Honduras.

Spain - Switzerland

One of the top favorites starts the competition. Nothing much to say about Spain. Most important news is they’ll start with Villa alone in front and Torres on the bench (if my source is correct, anyway). Spain doesn’t concede too much and 4-5-1 will make their defense even tougher than usual.

Ottmar Hitzfeld is Switzerland’s coach and that will be their biggest strength. They’ll be playing tough defense and will try to keep starting result. If they concede, I doubt they’d open too much. Their tournament starts in the second round.

I expect a tough battle and Spain’s win without conceding. 1-0 or 2-0.

.

UPDATE:

Well, that's what I call a surprise. Shock! In last 3 World Cups only three selections made a progress after a defeat at the start and every of those 3 recovered after a loss against the strongest group team. We'll see what Spain will do after Chile's win earlier.

Was planning to back Uruguay tonight, but after this... My major concern is SA is a host country. Which means, sometimes some "little" gifts, penalty, red card, flag stays down... And if they lose today, they'd finish the tournament. No bet so far, but will post if I change my mind.

Wednesday's World Cup round-up

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has prepared his players for the deafening sound of vuvuzelas - by inviting fans to attend the team's training.
Ahead of his side's opening World Cup game against Spain, Hitzfield organised a public training session knowing that spectators would bring their plastic horns.
"It is good for the players to be prepared for what they will hear on the pitch," he explained.

Matthew Upson is certain that team-mate Wayne Rooney will soon end his England goal drought.
Rooney has found the net in only one of his last eight internationals and has not scored for England since September.
But West Ham defender Upson said: "It will happen. Wayne's movement is great. He is a class player and he is totally gifted.
"He just needs to relax, play his game and the goals will come because he is top drawer."

New Zealand hero Winston Reid believes his goal against Slovakia justified his decision to play for the All Whites.
Reid, 21, opted to represent the country of his birth rather than Denmark, where he was brought up from the age of 10.
"For a long time I have been torn between the two countries. I was asking myself if I was a Kiwi or a Dane," said Reid, who won 10 caps for Denmark's Under-21s.
"This is the biggest stage in the world for football and that has to be the most important goal of my life."

Cristiano Ronaldo would have happily swapped his man of the match award for three points against Ivory Coast.
Ronaldo was impressive for Portugal in their Group G opener, but his team were unable to break the deadlock and had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
The former Manchester United star said: "It's always good to win individual awards. But if I could change it for anything, I would change it for three points.
"But I would say that nothing is lost. This has happened with England and with other teams."

New Zealand - Slovakia, NO BET

.

I'm not sure about this one. New Zealand will park the bus in front the goal and will try to frustrate Slovakians. Best they have is few players from English Championship, main threats will be set pieces.

Slovakia is a kind of mystery for me, but fell they're far below Italy and Paraguay. If they don't score in the first 20 minutes, could have a plenty of problems. Also, game will be played on 1500m above the sea level and will be hard to breath and keep the pace.

I don't like to bet on under, but 2.20 on under 2 looks really tempting. Also, wouldn't exclude a possibility of a draw, 0-0 for example. Will decide later and post it.

.

Portugal - Ivory Coast, Portugal @ 2.30 (Expekt) 0-0 LOST

Portugal is very good side. Look at their first eleven. Results from qualifications usually are not a good indicator. I predict a good tournament for them and think they can even eliminate Spain in a possible 1/16 match.

Ivory Coast is, in my opinion, most exaggerated selection in SA. Drogba will probably start the game, although he’s far from be fit, since this is a game for 2nd place in the group. They have Sven Goran Eriksson on the bench and I almost have no doubt they won’t pass the group.

I would like to see better odds (based on IC exaggeration), but 2.30 is totally acceptable.

Brazil - DPR Korea, Korea +1ah first half @ 1.925 (bet365) 0-0 ht WON

I already wrote my opinion about Brazil. My main favorites for a trophy. Enough.

The truth about Korea is actually nobody knows anything about their potential (which surely isn’t very big). I’ve read in some press, their best player (no way to remember his name) left the country before 5-6 years, came to Serbia and was playing for Bezanija (club who dropped in the second division)! Only sure thing about them is they all would die for the country (maybe a bet on red card could be a nice choice).

It’s first and the easiest game for Brazil and I can’t see a single reason to push to their limits and waste energy. Goals against Korea will hardly be decisive (in case of same points for Br.,Por. and Iv.Coast, goals against Korea would be erased). On the other side, I can see a fanatical fight from Koreans and think they can resist first half.

.

That's it for today. Good luck people, see you tomorrow.

Tuesday's World Cup round-up

North Korea has secured legal rights to televise World Cup matches live, according to Asia's broadcasting union - who deny that the communist state had pirated a recording of the opening fixture.
According to South Korean broadcaster SBS, the North's Korean Central Broadcast Service (KBS) aired Friday's 1-1 draw between South Africa and Mexico without permission.
But the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union said North Korea - whose team is competing at the World Cup for the first time in 44 years - had used legal footage "right from the start" following a deal between the union and football's world governing body Fifa.

Meanwhile, North Korea coach Kim Jong-hun bristled at a question from South Korean media ahead of his team's opening match against Brazil. A reporter, speaking in Korean, referred to his nation as "North Korea" in a news conference on Monday - rather than by the country's official name, the Democratic Republic of Korea.
"There's no such country named 'North Korea,' replied Kim. "Next question."
A question about North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il's involvement in team selection was then cut off, with a Fifa official reminding journalists not to ask political questions.

France's playmaker Yoann Gourcuff - the struggling heir apparent to Zinedine Zidane - is being cast as socially isolated from the core of Les Bleus squad after an anonymous start to the World Cup in their drab 0-0 opener with Uruguay.
"Yo [Gourcuff], I never hear him," said captain Patrice Evra. "To speak to Gourcuff, you have to talk to [Jeremy] Toulalan. It's with him that I see him having a laugh."
There is even speculation that Gourcuff is being ignored by his team-mates on the pitch, with Nicolas Anelka and Franck Ribery allegedly guilty of deliberately not passing the ball to the Bordeaux midfielder.

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo added his voice to the complaints about the wall of sound being made by the vuvuzela trumpets at the World Cup.
"It is difficult for anyone on the pitch to concentrate," he said.
"A lot of players don't like them, but they are going to have to get used to them. Hardly anyone likes them, but the people who do like them are those who like to blow the instruments and make a racket."

More than 100 World Cup security stewards have protested in Durban a day before Spain plays Switzerland as they call on Fifa to confirm what they should be paid by contractors for working at the tournament, according to reports.
Armed police looked on as the workers danced, chanted and sang at the peaceful demonstration on Tuesday. Protest leader Sibusiso Mthethwa said the stewards would "protect our visitors" even if their demand for higher wages are not met.

Holland - Denmark, Holland -1 ah @ 2.03 (Pinnacle)  2-0 WON

.

Holland has a little bit shaky defense with Mathijsen in charge, but their attacking power is huge.1st place in the group is reserved for them, but tragically for Dutch they'll face Brazil in quarter and finish the competition.

Denmark is a kind of mistery for me.They finished 1st in qualification group, left Portugal behind. No Bendtner (some danish media announced today he'll play),but even with him...Kjaer,key defender, has been injured but will be in the team (not fit though).Same with goalie Sorrensen.

.

UPDATE:

Japan - Cameroon, Cameroon to win @ 2.23 (188 bet)  1-0 LOST

Japan, correct me if I’m wrong, has just one decent player – Honda and some veteran internationals. They were in a sensationally bad shape in friendlies, in qualifications stayed behind Australia. Struggling to score, defense is a joke.

Cameroon, not so better defense, as all Africans lack in discipline and tactic and thankfully to Eto’o not so good dressing room atmosphere. But also, as all Africans they feel like at home in SA, decent team and some tall players that should be a big threat after set-pieces.

No big philosophy, Cameroon to win.

.

UPDATE II:

Regarding Serbia.
We looked like a bunch of drug addicts with amateur, stoned coach in charge. It wasn't luck,Ghana deserved their victory.
Doomed now.I see two possible scenarios in rest two games, but none of them will see us in the second round.Half teams still haven't played their first games,we're already packing home. Still feel like I'm gonna puke.

Monday's World Cup round-up

Adidas, maker of the Jabulani World Cup ball, has rejected claims that it was to blame for England goalkeeper Robert Green's error that led to England drawing 1-1 with the United States on Saturday.
Adidas's Thomas Schaikvan said: "We are happy with the ball's performance and we don't think it had anything to do with the goal England conceded. On the contrary, if you look at the games so far, some goalkeepers have been the stars of the tournament.
"The Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and United States goalkeeper Tim Howard won the man-of-the-match award in their games, and the South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was also excellent against Mexico."

Meanwhile, Howard believes the draw with England was a better result than the United States' famous World Cup win in 1950. That 1-0 shock was an isolated success, with the US not appearing in the World Cup for another 40 years, but Howard said the result was evidence of progress.
"It is a better result than 1950," he said. "We are better positioned than we were then. We expected to put a performance in and get at least a draw, which tells you how far we have come."

France's Florent Malouda has denied that a bust-up with coach Raymond Domenech cost him a starting place against Uruguay:
"It may appear surprising to you, but it was a defensive choice. That's how the manager presented it to me," Malouda said. "I learned of it at 4pm after the meal. It didn't affect my digestion, the pancakes were very good, but there was real disappointment."

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has hailed countryman Fabio Capello as "a winner" and tipped England as one of the teams that can win the World Cup.
"England are one of the great threats. It is not because Capello is Italian that is important. It is because he is good, he is a winner," said Lippi.
"I have said before that the favourites are Brazil and Spain.

"But personally I also feel Argentina, Germany, Italy, France and England can all win and be careful of Holland. They have all come here because they want to win."
