ENGLISH FOOTBALL - PICKS AND PREVIEWS

First round in Championship will maybe bring a brighter picture about teams’ capabilities this season. Sure thing is, this campaign will be closer than usual. Certainly 10 clubs will compete for promotion. Public’s favorite is ‘Boro. They’ve brought 3 players from Old-firm (critics called them Scottish rejects) who should be a class above second tier. Adding on that a squad from previous season, ‘Boro really look like the most serious contender for a spot number 1. Personally, I dislike Strachan but if I have to choose I’d say Middlesbrough to win a league. Forest haven’t made any significant signing and I’m not sure can they make one step more from last season’s play-off. Burnley sold Steven Fletcher to Wolves for £6.5m which should allow them some new signings. Without Coyle as a manager they’re not the same, but possess enough quality for play-of at least. Hull are a mystery for me and their achievement depends from Jimmy Bullard’s idea where to play this season. Leicester should repeat (at least) last season success and finish in the play-off zone. This time with Sousa (ex-Swansea) as manager, instead Pearson (at Hull). Next contender is Reading. Strong finish of the previous season was extended with more than decent friendlies. They have enough potential for play-off, for sure. QPR as always spent a lot. This time, difference is Nigel Warnock (ex C.Palace) who should bring more than necessary level of discipline in the dressing room. That’s seven clubs for six places. Bristol City, Leeds, Portsmouth and Sheffield United will try to ruin their plans. Main contenders for relegation are Watford and good old Scunny (this time without Hooper and Hayes).
In League One, top rated sides are Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton. Wednesday have made few impressive signings, including last one - Clinton Morrison (Coventry). Southampton will be very strong again, but this time they’ll be feeling a huge pressure to get something (differently from previous season, after 10 points penalty). My third favorite is Huddersfield. They’ve invest a lot, but in previous seasons they didn’t have enough self-confidence and winning mentality. This season could be their. This three sides will decide a champion. For a play-off spot will compete relegated Plymouth and Peterborough, Brighton, Leyton and Charlton. Last mentioned team is, in my opinion, overrated and don’t expect too much from them. It won’t be less interesting at the bottom. Main contender for relegation should be Tranmere.
Choosing a winner in the first round is like a walking through the mine field, but think I have two for now. Analyzes will follow.

December was surely the worst betting month in my life. The fact it was a failure for 99% of punters doesn't make me feel better. However, I hope new year should return my record in green. Here is the first analyze for today. Before the 4pm kick-off will probably write few more words about the rest. Stay tuned.
.
Gordon Strachan was appointed to secure promotion to Premier. Boro have talented team, considering players’ potential, they should be in play-off zone at least. Strachan has specific training methods, in previous clubs (
Mancini has made a perfect start in City. Two wins from two games and two clean sheets. He has been talking seriously about Cup competition, the least he wants is early upset, Hughes was fielding strong squads and I believe Mancini will keep that manner. But, he also has injury problems. Wright-Phillips is major concern with his ankle problem, Stephen Ireland is definitely out, while Craig Bellamy is doubtful. Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor are at the African Cup of Nations. But the fact is City have a huge number of quality players and whoever will start the game will have a motive to put a good display. To prove himself to the new boss or to advertise before a transfer market, doesn’t matter.
My major concern wasn’t teams’ quality. Weather is cold, but it’s the same for both sides. Pitch is in good condition, won’t limit City’s pass play. I was thinking a lot about their seven draws in a row. In every case you could put an own house on City. This game also looks obvious. However, Mancini’s era has just started in great style and I don’t believe they’ll allow an early shock. Odd for Boro's win is based on mutual history that favors Boro, their 8-1 win from May 2008 and definitely has a value. I choose away win and handicap as a gamble.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher's first-half double helped Blackpool secure all three points at Middlesbrough.
Soon after Boro's Dave Kitson went close with a header, Barry Bannan passed to Taylor-Fletcher who battled through to side-foot home the opener.
Bannan and Taylor-Fletcher linked well again for the striker to double the lead after curling in a cracker.
Injured Boro captain Gary O'Neil was carried off late on to leave Charlie Adam to hammer in a fine third.
Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan (on his team's poor home form):
"It's not just the players - I need to go back, and the coaching staff need to go back and see how we approached this game.
"It is becoming a trend, doing well away from home and not so well at home.
"And I find it surprising because the supporters are absolutely fantastic. They're very, very patient."
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway:
"Don't start talking about promotion. We need to stay up, that's what my chairman wants me to do.
"We've got a group of people who are enjoying what they are doing, trying to learn their jobs.
"I'm trying to tell them when they are in certain areas, what to do and why to do it. They're taking it on board."

Boro started the season as one of the league giants. Big underachievement with results activated alarms in the club and manager Gareth Southgate has cleaned the desk. His successor, Gordon Strachan, has a big reputation. But, also has a different training methods that had been causing lack of results in the few starting games in his clubs. He claimed his first victories as manager of Coventry and Southampton in his fifth match in charge, in Celtic won in third game and in Boro also in fifth. They possess quality for top three (beside Newcastle and WBA). Needed a good manager, god excellent one –Strachan. After few good performances and unlucky results needed first win to turn the corner, got more than that. Jeremie Aliadiere, Seb Hines, Caleb Folan and Matthew Bates all remain on the sidelines. Big plus is returning one of the best wingers in Championship, Adam Johnson who return to the squad after missing Saturday's win for family reasons.
It finally happened, Blackpool have lost at home in 10th game. Club hold (for them) very high 8th place, but they’re typical home team. Their pitch, Bloomfield Road, has smaller dimensions and the grounds are closer than usual which give a strong support to home team. However, they’ve been noticing a drop in results lately. Have just one win in last six games (Scunthorpe United 4-1, at home) and in last two at home noticed just one point (Preston 1-1). At Saturday, also at home, lost vs. Barnsley. They put a decent display, got a lead, but conceded two goals in the last five minutes. Striker Ben Burgess and midfielder Billy Clarke are both out after picking up knee injuries.
After 5-1 win, Boro got a huge amount of confidence and second win in a row could be a start of good run of results. Kitson and Lita are killing duo in attack, this time will be supported with the crosses from the wing (Johnson) and don’t think visitors’ defense will be able to stop them. Also, big advantage for Boro will be attacking style of play that Blackpool carry. Here is too big difference in quality and considering moment of this game (Boro up, Blackpool down) I expect convincing home win. So, home win and handicap as a gamble.

Gordon Strachan's Middlesbrough tenure got off to a bad start as Jamie Mackie scored the only goal of the game for strugglers Plymouth.
Boro fell behind 19 minutes into the second half, when Mackie slotted past Brad Jones from 12 yards.

Argyle held on for three points despite seven minutes of stoppage time.
Home fans at the Riverside Stadium endured another dismal performance in Strachan's first game in charge, and victory was no less than Plymouth deserved following a spirited display which belied their lowly league position.

In opening 14 rounds and noticed 9 (from possible 42) points, Pilgrims haven’t shown anything that could keep them in the Championship. After seven consecutive defeats, team won twice (Peterborough and Scunthorpe), then again bad run with just one point in three games (bottom side, Keano’s Ipswich 1-1) and in my opinion it’s fair to say Plymouth simply don’t possess enough quality to resist against any decent club in Championship. Here are some facts about their previous effort. They are the only side not to have kept a single clean sheet this season, have picked up one point from their eight matches against top-half clubs and have conceded nine goals in the last 15 minutes of matches this season - more than any other club. Really can’t see any sign of potential improving. At

After few dominating seasons in domain frames, Celtic failed to win the title and changes were unavoidable. Gordon Strachan left the club and new boss is talented Tony Mowbray (ex West Bromwich Albion). Team played four friendly games as the preparation for the new season and the start looks more than encouraging. One draw, against Cardiff 0-0 and three wins 3-0 Brisbane Roar FC, 5-0 Al Ahly and the most impressive win on Wembley Cup against Tottenham 2-0 (with mixed team). Celtic play attacking football and it’s the main reason why Mowbray got his chance. Team has a lots of experience playing in European competitions and they’re the owner of one very specific record, just one European defeat (Barcelona) from last 35 games at Celtic Park! After the collapse of the TV channel, financial crisis threats to Scottish football and qualification for the Champions League is absolutely vital for the hosts. Two very important players, midfielders Scott Brown and Barry Robson are in doubt. But, it seems more like a mind-game, both passed the last training and they’re expected in the team. Defender (and skipper) Stephen McManus will miss the start of the season. All others are available to boss Mowbray. Stadium is sold out and the lads will have a huge support from the crowd.
Dinamo is one of the Russian giants, team with the rich history. In the previous season, they reached the third place (behind Rubin and CSKA) and got the chance to fight for Champions League group stage. This will be the first time that the club has taken part in the competition since its re-branding from the European Cup in 1992.. And the lack of experience playing in Europe will be the additional problem for the visitors. The biggest advantage is they’re in full competition shape. Dinamo played the half games in Russian league, while Scottish starts at August 15th. After 15 games played in domain competition, Dinamo hold 5th place with real chance to qualify for Europe, again. In the last round, in city’s derby game against Locomotiv Moscow, they played a draw (1-1), with another goal by Alexandr Kerzakhov (seven goals in 11 appearances, so far), who definitely will be the biggest threat for home’s net. The captain and very important midfielder, Dmitry Khokhlov is suspended, while the acquisition from Portugal side Braga, Luis Aguiar still isn’t fully fit and won’t appear. It is expected the talented youngsters Smolov, Kokorin and Svezhov get the chance tonight, but the big question is how they’ll react on hot atmosphere on Celtic Park.
Tony Mowbray have been making some statements, pointing Russian collective spirit, definite shape and organization, but the true is, he is looking for a convincing victory and finishing the job in the first game. I don’t think Celtic will trash them, but home win is absolutely real. Home win (Sunderlands 2.00) and over (Expekt 2.15).
