Champions League betting, Chelsea - Barcelona

a
Nothing much to say about these teams, except there will be a decent amount of pressure (mainly on Chelsea’s side).

Referee of this game is Felix Brych, an interesting lad. In his 20 Champions League matches, he’s shown a decent inclination to yellow and red cards, averaging 41.5 points per a game (yellow - 10 points, red - 25). He had pretty quiet game Benfica - Twente (last this season), but in four previous games he showed 24 yellow and 4 reds (average of 85 points!).

Big pressure, tight game and nervous referee forced me to go to the booking market.

Premier League betting, Blackburn - Chelsea

a
Blackburn are third from the bottom and I can imagine them in Championship next year, but they have a goal threat in every game. They still haven’t kept a clean sheet, but failed to score only two times at home (Everton - missed two penalties and Man City). They have played eight competitive games at home (six league - two Cup), and seven of those went in over (five with four goals or more).

Chelsea have plenty of problems in the defence line. There could be few reasons like adjusting to still new manager, too attacking set up and Cech far from being impressive. They have kept only one clean sheet of opening ten games, in the first round at Stoke. Main problem at Ewood Park should be defending set-pieces and keeping eye on Samba.

Cech looks very bad, lately. I found that he has the worst saves-to-shots percentage (46%) in the league. And when goalie is insecure, whole defence becomes shaky. My point is, Chelsea will need at least two goals for a win which could make a high scoring affair.

Premier League betting, Norwich City - Blackburn Rovers

Norwich have been playing very well, recently. They’ve lost just once in last five (Old Trafford 0-2) and at home have just one defeat of last 16 encounters (including Championship). However, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their all 10 league and cup matches this season and have conceded in 13 of the last 14 home games.
Blackburn are stuck to the bottom, only one win of nine in a league (Arsenal 4-3!). Some moral boost is League Cup win over Newcastle in midweek, but on the other hand they played 120 mins with full strength (Norwich will have fresh legs). They also haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their 12 games this season (nine went in over) and did it just once in 23 on the road!
I am pretty sure Norwich won’t be just sitting back, trying to win in a tactical battle (if they didn’t at Anfield Road and Old Trafford, why they should at home against Blackburn?). On the other hand, Blackburn gained some confidence and probably have decent expectations from this game. I am going on over.

Liverpool - Wigan

There’re finally some smiles at Anfield. They’re in the run of four consecutive wins without conceding and I’m sure they haven’t given up from the idea about Champions League next year (currently six points far from 4th spot). Liverpool have been playing much better at home and have scored two or more goals in seven of last nine games at home. Gerrard and Skrtel are rated as in doubt, while Martin Kelly should be fit.

Wigan will definitely be struggling till the last round. Their win in the previous round over Blackburn was their first of last 16 games and they’re currently first under the relegation line. They have never won at Anfield, losing five of last six competitive games. Defender Gary Caldwell should play with the mask.

Confidence at Eland is sky high after a great win over Chelsea. I expect a more attacking approach and victory with at least two goals margin (with one, half stake is back). Suarez should score. First bet on Liverpool after a while, a year or so.

Sunderland - Chelsea

Sunderland perhaps made a great deal selling Bent for 24mill, but on the other hand that left them without too much options in attack. For tonight’s game, Danny Welbeck is sidelined which should mean Asamoah Gyan will be alone in front line (new signing Muntari isn’t available). Without intention to put his qualities in doubt, he’s best as support forward and don’t think he alone is capable to seriously harm Chelsea’s back four. Sunderland have very good home record with just one defeat (Blackpool 0-2) out of 11 games. They stayed undefeated against Gunners (1-1) and Man Utd (0-0). However, against Chelsea they have unreal stats. 3-0 won at Stamford ended a run of 11 consecutive defeats (last five at home).

Chelsea started to show some signs of waking up with two league wins against Blackburn at home 2-0 and Bolton away 4-0. Torres won’t be in a team tonight, but his arrival (as well as capture of David Luiz) should be a real boost and recover of title hopes. On the other hand, failure at the Stadium of Light would end it very fast. Chelsea have the best defensive record (19 goals conceded) with Cech impressing lately, Drogba has returned something of his old shape, Anelka scored 6 goals in last 5 league games against Sunderland and I believe in their good display tonight.

Despite that very good record against Sunderland, Chelsea won four of mentioned five at Stadium of Light by one. Bearing in mind their humiliation in reverse fixture, I think it could be something more.

Bolton - Chelsea

Really amazing stats, here. Coyle has been trying to make a fortress from home ground as he did in Burnley and he’s doing pretty well as Bolton have suffered just one home defeat of 11 Premier games (Liverpool 0-1), stopped Man Utd and defeated Spurs scoring four. On the other hand, Chelsea have been a bogy team for the Trotters. Both at home and away, Bolton have only one win out of 20 games and that came after Terry’s own goal in the last minute.  Even more, they lost last seven at home to nil.

Chelsea have only three wins on the road of eleven games which is quite shocking and they’re winless away from home in six games (four defeats). I’m not sure am I closer to believe Chelsea will bounce back trashing someone with 4/5-0, or they’ll simply sink with Ancelotti and stars which time has passed.

Definitely I can’t make a case for a serious bet. But with these odds, backing home side is more tempting. Will try with a small gamble, Bolton/Bolton ht/ft at 11 (various bookies) looks interesting.

Value Betting - Guide for Beginners

I wrote an article for www.superbetting.com about value betting. It should be useful for beginners, but interesting for everyone. Enjoy...

Please, be free to comment it.

Here’s the original address of the article:
p
VALUE BETTING - GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Value betting is pretty new concept based on the assumption some teams are overpriced or underpriced by bookmakers. There are always plenty of arguing between supporters and opponents of this concept. One side says betting on unfair prices is nothing else than giving your hard earned money directly into bookies’ full pockets. Other group points irrelevance of 0.05-0.10 odds difference and states that human brain is not a Deep Blue computer to make a difference between 65% and 66% (for example) possibility of winning. So, which group is right?
p
Understanding the concept
p
To understand the basic concept of value betting, first you must understand how betting market works in general. Probably the best example for explanation is tossing of a coin. There are always two possible outcomes - heads and tails. So, there is 50% of probability for both. Converting that in odds, we get 2.00 (I’ll use decimal odds format) and that would be a fair odd. If you toss a coin 1000 times, you will get 500 times each of two outcomes. Maybe few times less or more than that, but your balance would be around zero. Now imagine two guys who make an online bet and put $50 dollars on it, both. One of them loses $50, other wins $100? Well, no. In that case bookmaker would not get anything and their existence is based on profit (huge profit, that is why their number is countless nowadays). It is not a steal (not yet, at least), that’s how the whole industry works. So they won’t offer 2.00, but 1.90 (for example). New situation is next, one bettor will lost $50, other will get $95 and bookie will have guaranteed $5 of each bet. Now, let’s imagine 1000 bets. You will invest $50.000 and as it’s predictable you will win 500 times. But instead $50 (single bet) x 2.00 (fair odd) x 500 (number of winning bets) = $50.000 (zero profit), you’ll get only 50 x 1.90 (market odd) x 500 = $47.500! Bookmaker’s services, remember? What about if some bookie, because the lack of competition, impudently offers you 1.85 for the same bet? Short answer, he will get additional $1.250 bonus for the services (50 x 1.85 x 500 = 46.250)! If you don’t care about 0.05 difference (despite it looks so irrelevant), you will be making an extra tip to the bookie.

How it really works?

Now, I'll convert this into real betting. What is a basketball spread betting (or Asian handicaps in football) other than two outcomes with same possibility? Bookmakers are hiring the best experts to make basketball offer that rates chances of both teams with 50%. Margin, for example, is -5.5 on team A. They will win with 6 or more, or will not. Our fair odd should be 2.00, in reality they are 1.85 - 1.95. If you decide to test your luck in betting for one weekend, it’s not a big deal. If you are in the betting world for few years or more, you would be probably shocked if realize how much money you have wasted just because not paying attention on 0.05 difference. Now, you are starting to scratch your head. On the betting market, 99% of bettors are losing their money and just 1% winning at the long-term. Pay attention where you are placing your bets. Best possible advice is to make several accounts at different books and choose the best odd for every event.

Now I come to the point where supporters and opponents of value betting start clamoring. How to make decision is there any value in some odd and does it worth of a bet?! For this purpose I'll include bets with three possible outcomes, a typical 1X2 betting in football games (as at two outcomes, here is also bookies’ provision deducted from 100%). Let me make one example. In season 2009/10, Chelsea were priced 1.20 at home against Everton (that is usual price for Chelsea at home against any team out of top six). 1.20 odd means there is 83.33% of chance it will be a home win. Chelsea were the strongest team in Premier League, no injuries, no mercy at Stamford Bridge. Everton had long injury list and big crisis in performance and results. So, does it worth of a bet? Opponent of value betting would say it is the easiest and fastest way to make 20% of profit. Safe as in the bank, but you get it for less than two hours! Supporter will ask him: “Would you bet on it if there is 1.01 odd instead 1.20?! One percent is still good for 120 minutes!” Hmm... If you wish to bet on such low odds, you have to be aware of this. Betting on 1.20 actually means you have to make a streak of 5 consecutive wins to avoid loss. Winning bet of $100 stake on 1.20 brings you $20 of profit. If you lose only one of five, you will be in deficit. Now, look at the history of Chelsea - Everton meetings at Stamford Bridge. Last five ended with only two home wins and three draws! Opponent is in trouble and his bank is broke.

Calculating the value

There are many different ways for calculating the value. One group are math experts and use complicated methods for calculation the fair odds. Even I made once a formula for calculation Asian handicaps. After "only" about half an hour, I could tell you is it better to take -0.75 or -1.0 handicap, where's a better value and where bookie made a mistake. All of my methodology crashed like a house of cards when I realized that 5% difference in my assumption about possibility causes changing the “fair odd” for 0.15! If I say there is 60% of possibility Liverpool will defeat Aston Villa at home, odd should be 1.67. With 65%, it should be 1.53! So, how the hell I should know is it 60%, or 65%?! Other group of supporters use statistical methods, based on history results. On that way they calculate possibility of future results and are finding the value. I have not investigated these methods. Football is not the same game like before 20 years, why results should be?

My warmly advice to all beginners is to pay attention on the price at the same way as you do about the outcomes. You are pretty sure Liverpool will defeat Villa? Fine. Now, look at the offer. 1.40? That's pity. Leave it and don’t think about that game again. Continue with the researching and you’ll find another game with acceptable odd. After few years of betting you will get a sense for value and fair odds and your hard work will start to pay off.

Statistic update

After free fall in October and November, my primary target was to stop the losing streak and it has been accomplished so far. December is currently green, but I'd be satisfied with zero at the end of the year (wouldn't be delighted though). Season objective is a positive balance. It won't be easy with -50 units, but I'll be working hard as always.

Manchester City – Arsenal

Citizens are having a good start of the campaign, 17 points from 8 games and lie currently at the 2nd place. I still believe they have no serious chance for a title, but as far as they believe in it they’ll be giving their best. And the best from such paid players could be really terrific. They don’t lack in confidence as Chelsea have already be beaten at home soil. Few injury worries for Mancini, but considering quality of full squad they could be characterized as minor. Kolo Toure will face a late fitness test and Kolarov is still out. Mario Balotelli is finally fit and will have a place on the bench.

The Gunners are playing another season that looks like one before. Wenger’s kids are great talents, Cesc is one of the best World’s players, Arshavin one of the most dangerous, they all have a great pace… But beside more experience, they really need more strength. Physically, they’re far below the top Premier sides which cause plenty of problems in the midfield tackles and in aerial challenges. And that again, with the lack of counter attack opportunities, brings defeats in the big games. Also, Wenger has some serious problems with injuries in the defense line. Almunia is long term absent and Fabianski is all except safe goalie that gives security to four players in front of him. Then, center backs, Koscielny and Vermaelen are injured (Sagna is back though). So, not so impressive defense will have to cope with two top shape “beasts”, Tevez and Adebayor. Beside mentioned, midfielder Jack Wilshere is suspended. Arsenal have won one of their last eight Premier League away games and have not kept a clean sheet in their last 15 league and cup away games.

I’m well surprised with the odds here. In my opinion, bookmakers have exaggerated Arsenal’s Champions League performances. This is something else, trip to Manchester is probably the hardest they’ll have this season. Chelsea made a five points margin yesterday and Mancini wouldn’t be satisfied with a point here. Home win.

Chelsea – Wolverhampton

Nothing much to say about Chelsea. They look like a mean machine, especially at home. All four wins with 14 goals scored and not a single conceded (691 minutes in total). They also have won 14 and lost one of their last 15 Premier League matches at Stamford, 8 wins in a row. Chelsea have big squad for rotation and European trips (played CL game at Moscow) don’t make any worries for Ancelotti. After a virus Drogba should be fit, while Lampard is still out.

Wolves look like they suffer from the second season syndrome. They’ve noticed just one win, at the opening day (at home, against Stoke 2-1). Three consecutive defeats on the road, Fulham, Spurs and Wigan. Mick McCarthy has a habit, sometimes to rest his best players against top sides. Now, he’ll be forced to give a chance to some youngsters and fringe players. Midfielder Guedioura is out with a broken leg, another midfielder Stephen Hunt and defender Jody Craddock are also injured. Mancienne is ineligible to face his parent club and skipper Henry is suspended. Five players. For this game, 19 years old David Davise has been recalled from his loan at Walsall!

Ancelotti doesn’t calculate during the game and his players look like they’re really enjoying in the game and scoring goals. Also Chelsea haven’t had much problems with defensive sides (usually at home lose the points against top league teams), as they won nine competitive games this season and in all of those had a lead at the half time. Wolves, with all missing players, don’t look like a team that can stop them.

Spartak Moskva - MSK Zilina

Russians are contender for the second place in the group. Assuming no one will take too much from Chelsea, with away win at Marseille they already finished a big part of the job. Now, they need to confirm that points, every mistake would erase it. Spartak’s boss has been trying to remark the absence of few midfielders, but seems only Drincic’s is worth of notice.

.

.

Despite recent progress of Slovakian football, I don’t rate Zilina too high. Can’t imagine them in the next round and most they could is to make some effort and win French for the third spot. They also have a big “imperfection” as they play offensive football regardless the opponent’s name.   So they did against Chelsea and conceded 4, instead 1 or 2. Now boss Hapal announced the same plan which, in my opinion, can only see them hurt. Spartak have some problems against highly defensive sides, but actually like when someone comes “for a win”.

Home side is strong favorite here and everything except a convincing win would be a first class surprise (for me, at least). However, I’m not ready to take any bigger handicap.

Manchester United - West Ham

United drew at Craven Cottage when already noted 3 points. Two times lead, wasted penalty and 88th minute equalizer made Fergie raging after the game. Main target was defense line that should reacted much better before both goals. Additional thing that makes him nervous is Chelsea and their 12 goals in just 2 games. West Ham game should be a response to those who don’t believe. Rooney is in the team after a stomach bug and he’ll try to back on the track after 13 games without a goal. This is a nice opportunity for raising self confidence. Paul Scholes will probably be rested and replaced with Michael Carrick. United have won 11 of their last 12 league matches at Old Trafford and scored 3.25 goals per game in average. Against West Ham won their last five matches and scored 14 goals in those.

.

The Hammers started the campaign in a manner that should announce another bleak season. Two defeats and 6 goals conceded. And while opening loss vs. Villa wasn’t so unexpected, real shock came in the second game with 1-3 home defeat vs. Bolton (side that is well known with defending approach to away games). Team doesn’t look dangerous, midfielders can’t cope and in defense anarchy rules. Considering the funds that have been invested in the squad, despite part of that was hardly wasted (can’t not to think about Diamanti), management probably expects more than a fight for avoiding relegation and Grant could be the first manager in Premier to face exit door. Skipper and main man at the back line, Matthew Upson, should return to the side. West Ham are without an away win in the league since the first day of last season.

Situation guarantees a deadly serious approach from United. Proud is damaged, Chelsea are on the top and no European games for a while. I predict a high scoring victory.

Premier League analyze

Chelsea – Wigan

Nothing much to say about Chelsea. They have a title in the hands and need a win which would be a first Premier-FA Cup double in the club’s history. They play at home where have 16 wins of 18 games, just one draw (Everton 3-3) and one defeat (Man City 2-4). Chelsea surprisingly lost the first game vs.Wigan on the road 1-3, but in nine games before that have eight wins and a draw. Carlo Ancelotti will name the same squad that won at Liverpool.

.

Wigan are probably the most unpredictable side in Premier, usually give their best against strongest sides but slip against bottom clubs. They would surely like to make themselves famous by burying Chelsea at Stamford. But, there’re few problems. Three players are the spine of the team. Chris Kirkland has a finger injury which means Vladimir Stojkovic deputize him again. Stojkovic is a joke and I’m especially annoyed he’s the first option for Serbian national team. Second of those three is Titus Bramble, key defender, who is out with a foot problem. And third is winger Charles N'Zogbia who could return (but won’t be 100% fit) after recovering from an ankle injury.

This won’t be a game for Chelsea that they have to win to stay in the race for a title, progress in the Cup or CL. This is the game for a title and history. 100% of Chelsea is the game where I like to place my bet. And I think it would be insane to keep a minimal lead. Even 2 goal difference could be a kind of risk. On the other hand, there’s nothing that can make me think any kind of surprise is possible. Don’t like to bet on teams that must win, but this is something else. Bet is Chelsea -2.5 ah, best price is 1.90 at 188bet.

Arsenal will play with the strongest squad, including Robin Van Persie. They still have sports motive as they can lose the 3rd spot (need a draw to keep it). But, anyway would like to make a show and a goal fest for the end.
Hodgson asked FA to re-schedule the game for Saturday to make one more day preparation for Europa League final. Was refused, but now has a perfect excuse to name reserve team. Interesting thing is in same occasions when everybody was talking how Fulham are tired, they made excellent results (draws vs. Sunderland and Liverpool and lost 1-2 in last minute vs. Everton). In combination with Fabianski and Cambell, I simply don’t have a stomach for this. No bet.

Drogba and Rooney are equal on the top of the goal scorers list. My gamble for today is Drogba to score a hat-trick @ 11.00 bet365.
