Second best defence in the league, against the side that hasn’t score in four of last five and have three straight defeats. Hull are in a great shape, undefeated in last seven league matches, three home wins in a row (Reading, Portsmouth and Cardiff). Things to worry is Hull also have scored only nine in eleven games this season (same as Watford) and only four in five at home. However, momentum is on home side and while they could easily finish in the play-off zone, Watford will be surely struggling to avoid relegation.

Championship betting, Ipswich - Hull City

Ipswich could be one of the hidden favourites for play-off. Decent squad from previous season has been additionally strengthened with three (for Championship) top signings. Michael Chopra guarantees goals, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is still Arsenal player, while Lee Bowyer should be a rock in the midfield. And Paul Jewell as a man in charge. I like it. They started campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory at Bristol, after that got eliminated from Northampton in Carling but Pearson played a reserve squad.

Hull City started the season with home defeats vs. Blackpool and League Two side - Macclesfield Town, both without scoring. There’re already some unrest in the club and Nigel Pearson could become the first candidate to be fired manager in Championship. They had very good away record last season, but won at Portman Road just once (in 1990). Striker Dele Adebola and defender Liam Rosenior could both return.

Hull on their travels could be a tough nut to crack, but I fancy Ipswich to win this one and to confirm play-off ambitions.

Quite frankly I am struggling to keep my stakes low, since I feel very confident about some bets. The Saints were so impressive against Leeds and Leeds can’t be that bad. If you know what I mean. West Ham have an unreal squad for Championship, while Donny would be with all seven missing players (including Sharp and Hayter) still contenter for relegation. Reading probably won’t be the same team from previous season. Too much income in the club and no investments in the new players. Leicester should win it...

Maybe one more game from Championship, or I’ll pick something from League One.

Coventry - Hull

Coventry are in a big downtrend as they dropped from 5th place to 18th and could be even involved into relegation battle. They’ve noticed just one win in last 15 matches (Palace at home, 2-1), haven’t kept a clean sheet in last eight and lost last three of four at Ricoh Arena. They also have the worst record against top-half clubs, losing six of eight. Manager Aidy Boothroyd hopes his goalie Westwood will be fit, especially because reserve Ireland is also injured. Striker Marlon King is suspended, another striker Platt will face a late fitness test. Skipper Carsley and defender Turner remain sidelined.

Hull City are actually moving in the opposite direction, they’ve climbed up to 9th  position and still carry the play-off hopes. They’re the best travellers in Championship, haven’t lost in last 13 on the road, including a win in the last away game and ending Forest’s historical home record. They have won half games against bottom-half sides and scored two games in average against the strugglers. Vito Mannone is out and will be replaced by Villa’s on-loan goalie Brad Guzan. 

Great odds on visitors, they’re now raised to 2.20! I predict more misery for Coventry and away win, but dnb option will be absolutely fine.

Van der Sar and statistic update

At the same minute Van der Sar decided to make a joke and Robert Koren made a first attempt on goal for Hull (from 30 yards). Unfortunately both situations ended with goals and something that should have been entertaining Saturday and money collecting turned into a serious disaster. Only light in the dark was Wednesday that played a game just as I expected and made a job done. I don't celebrate too much when win and don't moan when lose, but disturbing thing is entire list of results looks really shocking and it lasts for the couple weeks. However, better days are coming. Thanks for visiting and sorry for a bad run.

Leicester - Hull

The Foxes occupy shameful 22nd place (third from the bottom) and after a run of embarrassing results, Paolo Sousa got fired. The thing is, the team is almost the same from previous season (finished 5^th and lost after play-off penalties against Cardiff), but team was paying prices to Sousa’s attempts to implement his defensive philosophy of football that was working perfectly at his time at Swansea. Also, some of his management decisions didn’t help, like to leave top goal scorer and club’s mascot, Matty Fryatt, on the bench. It’s not a new boss syndrome, in the first game without Sousa players showed a new face and played like without the weight on the shoulders (Scunthorpe at home 3-1). I’m not a keen of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s admirer, but his arriving just confirms club’s ambition that his owner is repeating these days – Premier League. Erikson has already signed two very good players, extra talented Kyle Naughton from Spurs (should even start the game) and Villa’s defender Curtis Davies. Striker Dany N`Guessan is only missing.

Hull are facing a rough times in the second tier. And while at home things don’t look so bad (haven’t conceded a goal in all five games, scored just two tough), their record on the road again looks shameful. In previous season in Premier they finished without a win (6 draws and 12 scored goals in 19 games) and not too much have been changed. One win (very lucky one at Norwich) and four defeats with goal difference 3-13! I predicted at the start that lot will depend from Jimmy Bullard (key of their key players). He has an injury and will face a late fitness test for today’s game, but even when he was fit didn’t look too much interested for the game. Their ambition is return to Premiership, but that doesn’t sound likely for the near future.

Leicester will start climbing on the table (in fact, started already), they possess more than decent amount of quality and will finish somewhere in top eight – I’d say. Sousa’s era has been finished and players are eager to show their full potential. Opponent is very good for that purpose. Home win.

Norwich – Leicester

Despite the defeat in previous round (Hull at home, 0-2), Norwich have been noticing an encouraging start of the season. Sixth spot and play-off zone are something that guarantee they’ll be fully motivated (as long as Premiership dream lasts). Against Hull they were much better rival, but in last 10 minutes conceded twice and noticed very unlucky defeat. My assumption is they’ll be very eager to bounce back tonight. Midfielder Surman and defender Nelson are still out, while defenders Whitbread and Smith have returned to the full training.

Leicester’s current shape is at least embarrassing. Instead play-off spot, they’re keeping the bottom of the table with just 5 points of 8 games. On the road just a single point and goal difference 4-13, after they suffered real humiliation at Portsmouth (1-6). Sousa’s manager position isn’t stabile at all. Seems he couldn’t imply the system with tight defense that was successfully bringing results in Swansea. Oppositely, Leicester’s back line looks vulnerable, conceding large amounts lately. Chairman Mandaric has said he gives his full support to Sousa.  Usually, such statements mean opposite. Players possess enough quality for the top half of the table and certainly don’t enjoy when Portsmouth make a laugh of them. I’m sure Sousa’s departure is very close, maybe even tonight. Defender Miguel Vitor is suspended after red card.

 

Leicester won’t be relegated, that’s sure, but better results will come when they make a cut. Currently they look like a sinking boat. Hosts believe their Saturday’s defeat was a robbery, now are preparing a strong response.

Brentford – Hull City

Brentford started campaign in League One with one draw and two defeats in opening three rounds (good result vs. Swindon last weekend, 1-1 away). In the first round, they defeated League Two side, Cheltenham, 2-1 at home. The Bees don’t have so bright history in Carling Cup as they have not reached round three for 19 years. I think more important for them would be to keep the players fit than to try to boost self confidence tonight. However, striker Carl Cort and winger Sam Wood are injury doubts. Signing from Leicester, midfielder Nicky Adams, could have his debut.

Hull relegated from Premier, but managed to keep majority of the team from previous season. However, thankfully to the decent amount of arrogance already faced a tough life in the second tier (Millwall 0-4). New signing is Slovenian international, Robert Koren, who already made his debut in last round. I expect him to play again, to get used with the new team mates. Also considering news from Hull camp, they should have a strong line-up. Striker, Craig Fagan, will have to wait for his debut as he has a groin problem. If they qualify, it will be for the 4th time in five seasons.

 

I’m well surprised with these odds on Hull. Big difference in quality should be enough for an away win.

Millwall – Hull City

Millwall celebrated a come back to the second tier with a trashing of Bristol City, away (3-0). Ok there’s a fact City were without a bunch of regular players, but they’re also tipped as a contender for a play-off. Boss Jackett has a team that looks like entity, hard working side that rarely waste the points. Especially at the Den where they won 10 of last 11 games and in whole previous season (season in League One though) lost just once (in last November)! No injury concerns for Jackett as he has again striker Steve Morison and midfielder Darren Carter after international duty and a suspension. After slight injuries, Liam Trotter and Jimmy Abdou are back in contention as well.

Hull are tipped as one of the strongest team in Championship and they started well beating Swans 2-0. Nigel Pearson has a decent player for the second tier, but first problem is his key man, Jimmy Bullard, who doesn’t seem interested in playing for Hull any more. Other, probably bigger problem, is their away shape. Last season they were, only team without a win in Premier (6 draws, 13 defeats), in total 24 away league games without a win! Also, their only victory in 17 visits to Millwall was a 1-0 win in the old Second Division in August 1986. Promoted teams have a “first season” syndrome, at demoted teams symptoms are opposite. This could be a painful waking up and crash with the second level reality.

 

Lions surely like to look at themselves at 2nd spot. They have never stopped to dream about Premier and they’ll be putting maximum effort as long as their dream last. I expect a tight game, elbow in the favorite’s teeth  and 1-0 home win.

Newcastle 3 - 0 Preston

Newcastle moved five points clear at the top of the Championship as they kept up their unbeaten home record.
The Magpies took only three minutes to score, Peter Lovenkrands' attempted cross clearing Preston keeper Andy Lonergan and dropping inside the post. 
Top scorer Kevin Nolan doubled the lead after half-time when he burst into the penalty area and slotted in his 12th goal of the season. 
Substitute Ryan Taylor fired in the third in injury time. 
West Brom could narrow Newcastle's lead when they face Bristol City on Sunday. 
But the Magpies' promotion chase shows no sign of letting up after a comfortable win over Preston, who had their chances but lost to a far more clinical side.
Newcastle boss Chris Hughton:
"I think it is the most important thing. 
"We know West Brom and Nottingham Forest are one or two wins away from being a lot closer to us or being above us so we can't afford to lose focus. 
"Our preparation has to be the same and our mental attitude going into every game has to be the same."

"It was never a 3-0 game, that flatters Newcastle massively. 
"They'll have a good chance of winning promotion if they get referees like today. You have to have strong referees, especially against Newcastle, and he wasn't strong enough.

West Ham 3 - 0 Hull City

West Ham turned on the style to make it two wins in a row for the first time this season as fellow relegation strugglers Hull were reduced to 10 men.
Valon Behrami capped a surging run with a third-minute opener after exchanging passes with Guillermo Franco. 
And Hull's problems increased shortly after the break when Craig Fagan was sent off for a second bookable offence. 
Julien Faubert fed Carlton Cole for a slotted second before completing the win with a thumping late effort. 
It was West Ham's fourth consecutive clean sheet at home, and the emphatic scoreline - not to mention the buoyant nature of the display against a relegation rival - will surely please manager Gianfranco Zola.
The Hammers came out of the blocks at lightning speed and although they did not build on their overall superiority until after Fagan's dismissal, their performance was brimming with a brio and belief that have too often been missing this season. 
They were aided and abetted by a Hull side who, rarely in it apart from a brief spell of pressure before the break, were left with a mountain to climb after Fagan's departure. 
The result leaves Phil Brown's side just a point above the drop zone.

"It was self-inflicted, we had a game plan but it was unhinged by poor decision-making. 
"The sending-off was also self-inflicted, it was a poor decision by Craig Fagan to make the tug because he was already in the book.

West Ham - Hull City

West Ham have been noticing a slight improvement in past few games. Main reason is return of a key striker Carlton Cole who already reached his old shape and start scoring goals. The Hammers made very important victory against Birmingham (2-0 at home) in last round. The pressure has been decreased, but they’ll simply have to continue with collecting the points. Especially in six points games as this one is. Many other things have also been settled down. Zola’s position is safe again, club paid Curbishly and they won’t have to sell best players. The squad is even strengthened with few names. Benni McCarthy will miss the game because the knee problem, while his fellow striker Guillermo Franco is in contention to return. Gabbidon,Davenport, Boa Morte and Hine remain sidelined. Zola's side are unbeaten in their last four home games, keeping a clean sheet in the last three.

Hull City have collected the same number of points as today’s opponent and hold the 17th position with just one point far from relegation zone. They’re typical home side, from total of 24 points, 20 collected at home. On the road they’re the second worst team (after Burnley) with just four draws in 13 games. Tigers scored just 7 goals and conceded 31 and didn’t score in last three games on the road! The Tigers also have failed to score in seven of their last nine away games in the league. As for West Ham, this game is also decisive for Hull and I expected their intention to win all three points. That would, at the same time, make the defense line even more vulnerable. The biggest dilemma for boss Brown is should he include his “key of the keys”, Jimmy Bullard in this game. Midfielder has been absent for 11 weeks and still doesn’t train with full capacity. Geovanni remains sidelined, but midfielder Boateng is available after his red card at Blackburn was rescinded. Hull City have gone 18 games without an away win.

West Ham definitely have more potential than have been showing so far. Win vs. Birmingham decreased the pressure and give a wind in the back. They’ll be focused and fully motivated as this is a six point game. Hull simply lack in quality and while they at home compensate it with fanatical fighting, on the road don’t have a clue. Hosts are clear favorites here. Home win and again handicap as a gamble.

Man Utd 4 - 0 Hull

Wayne Rooney scored all four goals to send Manchester United top of the Premier League after victory over Hull.
Rooney opened the scoring when he slotted in a rebound after Paul Scholes' shot was beaten away. 
After Nani's free-kick was pushed on to the woodwork by keeper Boaz Myhill, United worked the ball to Rooney who smashed in a drive to make it 2-0. 
Rooney headed in Nani's cross to complete his hat-trick and fired in a low shot to cap his superb performance. 
It is a result that means United leapfrog title rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, who do not play in the league this weekend because of their involvement in the FA Cup. 
But while all seems to be coming together on the pitch for United - Rio Ferdinand was impressive on his return after three months out injured - there was disquiet off it.
Home fans voiced their anger at United's owners, frequently chanting "Glazers out" in protest at the scale of the club's debt and their perception the Americans are preventing new signings. 
Whether that is the case, there does appear to be a need for United to boost their firepower to ease the burden on Rooney. 
Michael Owen's finishing was well below the required standard, the former England man doing nothing to dismiss critics who suggest his best days are long gone. 
And while Rooney looked sharp, he looked equally frustrated at times - once even aiming a verbal volley at Darren Fletcher for a poor throw-in. 
But United will be delighted with Rooney's form and with the return of Ferdinand, who belied his three-month absence with an assured display - although Hull rarely tested the home defence.

Southampton 2 - 1 Ipswich

Wayne Thomas scored a stunning 20-yard half volley as League One Southampton shocked Championship side Ipswich to move into the FA Cup fifth round.
Saints debutant Lee Barnard tested Town keeper Arran Lee-Barrett with a volley before Thomas smashed in from the right corner of the box to open the scoring. 
Michail Antonio tapped in a second when Lee-Barrett spilt Rickie Lambert's free-kick with 15 minutes remaining. 
But Pablo Counago's late goal for Town ensured a frantic finish to the tie. 
However Roy Keane's side were unable to score an equaliser in the five minutes of added time as the 1978 FA Cup winners went out to a club who won it two years earlier.
Ipswich manager Roy Keane:
"The players know they have wasted a good opportunity to go further in the competition.
"I did not think we deserved to lose the game but we certainly did not do enough to win it. 
"The starting 11 was very good so nobody can accuse us of taking Southampton lightly." 
Southampton manager Alan Pardew:
"It was a hotly contested tie between two evenly matched teams and we had to dig deep. 
"Ipswich have got some good young players, who get around the pitch very well and we struggled to cope with that in the first half.

Manchester United – Hull City

United come into this game after a slap from City in Carling Cup and to make the things even worse both goals were conceded from top enemy at present. So, Sir Alex is very annoyed by that game, but also with whole season as well. United have noticed some very surprising defeats lately (four in last nine competitive games, Villa, Fulham, Leeds and City). Big debt of the Glazer family caused team probably can’t be strengthened during the winter market. Injury crisis also didn’t help. However, with a win today United would occupy top of the table (Chelsea and Arsenal play FA Cup). Defender John O'Shea is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a blood clot problem, while Vidic remains sidelined with a calf complaint. But, long waited return of Rio Ferdinand should happen today and Berbatov has recovered from a dead leg. United have won their last six league and cup matches against Hull.

 

Hull occupy the 18 place at the table with the second worst away record with just four points (four draws) from eleven games (first is Burnley)! Hard times are in front the Tigers and they look like serious contender for moving in the second tier. Big blow for their Premier League hopes is injury of their “key of the keys” man, Jimmy Bullard (will return probably next weekend against Wolves). Without him, Hull usually look harmless and focused only on defending their own goal. To change it, boss Phil Brown has brought Amr Zaki (played for Wigan previous season), but he’s totally unfit and won’t appear today. In previous round, Hull make the biggest upset of the round keeping a goalless draw at White Hart Lane thankfully to wonder game of goalie Boaz Myhill, but also to huge amount of luck. Defender Kamil Zayatte will face a late fitness test, but Brown has no other injury concerns.

 

United feel humiliated and this game should heal the wounds. Ferguson wants a win by few goals margin which would be a nice introduction to re-match vs. City. So far, United haven’t had any problems with the clubs of Hull’s level (Wolves 3-0,Wigan 5-0 and Burnley 3-0 in last three home games). And last, I think Hull spent the luck against Spurs and don’t expect them to be such fortunate again. Home -2.5 handicap win looks like a nice bet.

Hull 3-2 Everton

Hull held off an Everton fightback to earn a win which moves them level with their struggling opponents.
Stephen Hunt powered in a shot for the home side after Jozy Altidore's effort had been parried by keeper Tim Howard. 
Andy Dawson's free-kick and a Dean Marney shot added to the lead but Hull's Kamil Zayatte sliced a clearance into his own goal to give Everton hope. 
Zayatte conceded a penalty which Louis Saha converted for the visitors but the Tigers clung on for victory. 
Everton must have been on the end of a verbal bashing from manager David Moyes at half-time as they came out a different side after the break. 
However, their efforts came too late to rescue a dire opening half as the home side were resolute enough to earn three points and leave the Toffees with only one win in 10 games.
Hull had gone into the match without Jimmy Bullard as boss Phil Brown decided to rest his star man so that the midfield playmaker could recover from a minor knock to his knee. 
Bullard has had a major impact for the Tigers since his recovery from a lengthy spell out injured but Brown was taking the longer term view when leaving him out and the home side initially made light of his absence.
Hull City boss Phil Brown:
"I think it was a deserved win, even though Everton scored two goals in the second half. People might have been nervous at 3-2 but I wasn't unduly worried, I thought we still had a grip on the game. 
"Defensively, we were very good in the first half. The second half was a different ball game and an own goal unhinges you to a certain extent. 
"But we stuck at the task and thoroughly deserved the victory. 
"Jimmy Bullard's in a new area of his rehabilitation. It was just a precautionary resting and fortunately it has worked for everybody. 
"It now gives me a bit of a headache for Saturday, but they are the kind of headaches you want."

Hull City - Everton

Home side is in the run of four games at home without a defeat. Two wins (Wigan and Stoke) and two draws (Portsmouth and West Ham). Midfield playmaker, Jimmy Bullard, recovered from the injury (returned against Stoke), team improved the attacking potential, moved from relegation zone and manager Phil Brown still keeps his job. The problem is, their defense line is the worst in Premier (only Wigan conceded more, but thankfully to London’s disaster). This is their second meeting at KC Stadium this season. In League Cup, Everton made a convincing 4-0 win and that’s probably the reason for such low odds for away win.
